Personal/Family Problems?
Let's talk
about it.
DR. RON RICE
PSYCHOLOGIST—
POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION
Postpartum depression, or
"baby blues," is rapidly being
acknowledged as a significant
aftereffect of childbrith. Though
its intensity ranges from mild
anxiety to severe psychosis,
most women experience depres-
sion of some kind after a child
is born.
This state is not confined to
first-time mothers. Some women
become depressed after the birth
of each of their children. Almost
every mother, in fact, goes
through a "low" period starting
a few days after birth; and many
women experience severe
depression when they leave the
hospital. These feelings may last
only a few days, but if a woman
is physically run down, they may
persist for several months!
Some physicians prescribe
drugs to help a woman who is
in such a state but usually it is
preferable to treat the cause
rather than the symptoms. Often
it is enough to receive the emo-
tional support and reassurance
from family, friends, and other
mothers. Other times, profes-
sional counseling can help put
an end to the depression.
