Is Facing Bankruptcy

ew York — After 64
years of international
Jewish student
representation and program-
ming, the World Union of
Jewish Students is now facing
bankruptcy.
In a last-ditch effort to save
the World Union, chairman
Yossi Abromowitz recently
came to the United States
from his Jerusalem office to
raise funds for the
organization.
Abramowitz charged that
Simcha Dinitz, chairman of
the World Zionist Organiza-
tion, decided to cut all of
WUJS's funding from the
Student Division, which in
the past has covered 80 per-
cent of WUJS's budget.
"Promises were made by
Dinitz and other leaders to
help us, which turned out to
be just lip service,"
Abromowitz said.
According to an official
spokesman for WZO, no
precise budget cut has been
decided upon for WUJS as of
yet, and a decision will pro-
bably be made at the Jewish
Agency Assembly session
scheduled for later this
month. It is therefore
"premature to talk - about
cuts," he added.
The spokesman added that
the funding of WUJS in the
future will be "institu-
tionalized" within WZO —
thereby precluding the need
for WUJS to raise funds from
outside sources.
WUJS is now taking the
WZO to court because they
refuse to pay last year's legal
obligation of $27,000.
In this year's budget, ap-
proved by the new WZO Ex-
ecutive April 1, WZO reduc-
ed the allocation to its Stu-
dent Division by between 20
and 30 percent, and the divi-
sion then cut out the funding
to WUJS in order to keep its
staff's jobs.
WUJS, according to
Abromowitz, lost its funding
because "they (WZO) wanted
us to affiliate with a political
party. We said no, and now we
have no one to help us and go
to bat for us in the WZO," he
said.
However, informed sources
in Jerusalem who declined to
be named reported that
WUJS does have friends of in-
fluence. Mendel Kaplan,
chairman of the Jewish Agen-
cy Board of Governors, the
sources said, will act to en-
sure that the student body's
worldwide activities can con-
tinue, despite proposed fun-
ding cutbacks by WZO.
These same sources also
maintained that Edgar Bronf-
man, president of the World
Jewish Congress, is continu-
ing his direct support of
WUJS.
Explaining his refusal to af-
filiate, Abromowitz said, "If
we affiliate with a political
party, we won't be helping the
students anyway. We are not
going to give into party
politics no matter how
generous they are. Students
are not a tool to be
manipulated anymore," he
said.
Since 1984, when WUJS
divorced itself formally from
the WZO, it has been an in-
dependent, student-run
organization, with funding
coming from various sources,
the biggest of which was the
WZO.
"When we were enslaved to
the WZO, we had a budget of
only $100,000 and no pro-
grams or accountability," said
Abromowitz. "Now we have a
budget of almost $500,000,
about 20 programs, a core
staff of six people in
Jerusalem, and we have
regained our legitimacy at
the grass roots of students.
The students are making a
statement," he said.
WUJS, the umbrella
organization for Jewish
students worldwide, was
founded in 1924 in Antwerp,
Belgium, to combat anti-
Semitic Jewish student
quotas in European
universities.
Years later, after World War
II decimated Jewish student
life in Europe, WUJS helped
to settle Jewish refugees.
Over the years, WUJS
developed into a head-
quarters for Jewish student
activism and programming
world over. According to
Abromowitz, WZO then "took
WUJS over and killed it,
because it became very left
and they decided WUJS was
hostile:'
WUJS now represents
students from 40 different
countries. WUJS's elected
representatives have stan-
ding at the United Nations,
and meet with ambassadors,
state departments and the
press to make the student
voice heard in the Jewish
world.
WUJS also runs many pro-
grams such as an interna-
tional Jewish peace corps; the
Arad Graduate Studies In-
stitute in Israel; Keshet, a
nine-month program combin-
