The forests planted by the Jewish National Fund in Israel stand as symbols of the rebirth of the Jewish homeland. Today, they revitalize
the entire land of Israel — yet they are now subject to a new form of terrorism, arson.

This summer, more than 400 fires have ravaged over 25,000 acres of forest and pasturelands which had taken generations to cultivate.
Last weekend alone, nearly 3,000 acres were destroyed by dozens of fires, prompting headlines in major U.S. papers and national news
coverage on the ABC and NBC networks.

Israelis have mobilized themselves to combat the blazes. In the Galilee, a group of Ethiopian schoolchildren travelled 12 hours on foot
to help fight flames in the north. In other areas of the Galilee,, brave firemen and local brigades battled fires for more than 28 hours.
Near Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, under-equipped volunteers struggled to extinguish fires that threatened outlying villages.

The Jewish National Fund now asks the American Jewish community to join Israel's fire-fighting efforts. In a joint statement, Dr. Joseph
P. Sternstein, JNF President, and Dr. Samuel I. Cohen, JNF Executive Vice President, said, "Arson has emerged as a deliberate tool
among Israel's enemies in their efforts to destroy the Jewish state. They seek to strike at the very symbols of the Jewish people's redemp-
tion of the land, at the very roots of Zion. It will not work. We must replace every tree, redeeming and beautifying the land these
terrorists are trying so hard to destroy. In addition, it is imperative that we purchase the latest fire-fighting equipment and communica-
tions systems, in order that our overwhelmed fire fighters may deal more effectively with these devastating conflagrations. We therefore
call upon all of our good friends to rally to Israel's support at this critical moment by making a generous emergency contribution?'
