mediately following Bitburg
is most notable. (The contrast
between the way the presi-
dent of the Federal Republic
of Germany and the president
of Austria approach their
countries and their own pasts
is striking. One brings honor
by fearlessly facing it and the
other shame by his selective
amnesia.)

This debate is a
battle for the
hearts and minds
of future
generations.

Ultimately this debate is a
battle for the hearts and the
minds of future generations of
Germans and of world public
opinion. These historians
neither deny nor condone the
Holocaust. Though many of
their arguments parallel
those made by the Holocaust
Revisionists — those who
deny it — they would unilat-
erally condemn any attempt
to argue that the Holocaust
was a hoax. But by "relativiz-
ing" the Holocaust they are
doing something that is
historically incorrect, moral-
ly offensive and ultimately
more dangerous than those
who deny that it happened.
This relativization of the
Holocaust promises the
possibility of a generation
which will say "yes, our
forefathers killed, but so do
many others; yes, terrible
things happened, but they
were done in order to protect
Germany from the threat of a
power-hungry Stalin; yes,
what was done to the Jews
was awful but Hitler had a
legitimate reason to fear
them; yes, horrible atrocities
were committed, but why is
this any different from the
Russian gulag, the Cambo-
dian massacres, American
brutality towards the Indians
and Israeli behavior in
Gaza?"
Though it may initially be
Germans who will ask these
questions, it is not hard to im-
agine them in the minds and
mouths of French, English,
and American historians,
teachers, and journalists.
After convincing them-
selves of the validity of these
"yes, buts," the next question
may well be "Why is it that
Germans are singled out for
the world's approbation? Who
is responsible for making
Germany bear this mark of
shame and why do the Jews
receive all this sympathy?"
