SIDEWALK SALE Labor Zionists Back Mideast Compromise STAFF REPORT L abor Zionist Alliance of Metropolitan Detroit has urged Israel to ac- cept the possibility of a demilitarized Palestinian state within the West Bank and Gaza Strip. In a six-point resolution passed June 21, the organiza- tion urges Israelis and Palestinians to compromise to reach peace. While not calling for the creation of a Palestinian state, the resolution calls for Israel to recognize that this is a demand Palestinians are likely to bring to the bargain- ing table and is a possible out- come of negotiations, accor- ding to Sheryl King, an in- itiator of the resolution. The Labor Zionist state- ment supports an interna- tional peace conference leading to direct negotiations between Israel and the Arabs. Israel should accept Palesti- nian delegates to the con- ference as chosen by West Bank and Gaza Strip residents, according to LZA. At the same time, the resolution urges Palestinian leaders to publicly recognize Israel and to cease calling for the Jewish state's destruction. Jews and Arabs in Detroit should meet to discuss means of furthering the peace pro- cess, the resolution said. "We are committed to Israel's continued existence as a secure, open and democratic Jewish state," the resolution said. "We find the position of the Likud-led Israeli government to be con- trary to the advancement of Zionism and democracy." King said the purpose of the resolution was not as much to influence Israel's policy as to Sherman Elected To UJA Board Detroiter Jane Sherman has been elected to the United Jewish Appeal Board of Trustees.
