Max Osnos, whose business
skill was highlighted by his
founding and operation of
Sam's Inc., for a quarter of a
century one of the leading
downtown Detroit depart-
ment stores, died June 16 at
age 88. He expanded that
business project from Sam's
Cut Rate which his father,
Sam Osnos, established on
Monroe Street.
Max Osnos' business adven-
tures were matched by his
philanthropic involvements.
He inspired identifications
with many causes and was a
leader in some of the most im-
portant. He was an activist
and office holder in the
Jewish Welfare Federation
and Allied Jewish Campaigns
and in Federation agencies.
A bequest in his father's
will led to the assurance of a
fund for the creation of Sinai
Hospital and Max Osnos was
its first president. He also was
among the first who set up
the Detroit sector for State of
Israel Bonds.
In his congregational ac-
tivities, he was a founder of
Temple Israel.
Mr. Osnos began his civic
activities in 1942, when he
helped save the Detroit Sym-
phony Orchestra after the
Symphony Society disbanded.
In 1949, he was active in ef-
forts to help displaced persons
get from Europe and North
Africa to Israel or the United
States.
In 1950, he was named
general chairman of the
United Jewish Appeal and
directed an Israel Bonds drive
in 1951.
In 1953, Mr. Osnos was ap-
pointed by Gov. G. Mennen
Williams to the Michigan
Mental Health Commission.
He was a director of the
Jewish Hospital Association
of Detroit, the Jewish Welfare
Federation ad the Detroit Ur-
ban League. He was a trustee
of Children's Hospital of
Michigan and a member of
the Masons and the Franklin
Hills Country Club.
He leaves his wife, Arabelle;
three sons, David Osnos of

Osnos of Washington, D.C.,
and Robert Braitman; a
daughter, Mrs. Saul (Dr. Mar-
cia) Cohen of Weston, Mass.;
two brothers, Herman and
Bernard of Florida; a sister,
Mrs. Mira Austin; and seven
grandchildren.

Carle Cziske

Carle F. Cziske, a technical
writer for the automobile in-
dustry, died June 15 at age
82.
Born in Detroit, Mr. Cziske
had been with Campbell
Ewald advertising, working
on the Chevrolet account, for
22 years. He then went to the
Burnett agency, where
Oldsmobile was his major ac-
count. Mr. Cziske was a foun-
ding member of the Engineer-
ing Society of Detroit.
He leaves his wife, Clara;
two sisters, Mrs. Thomas
(Gertrude) Surrelle of Ocean-
side, Calif., and Mrs. Walter
(Edith) Messner; a brother,
Henry Ciske, Sr. of Mt.
Clemens; nieces and
nephews.

T. J. Goosen

Theodore J. Goosen, owner
of the G and C Amusement
Co. in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.,
died June 17 at age 40.
A native Detroiter, Mr.
Goosen also was the owner of
The Malt Shop in Mt. Plea-
sant and a member of the
Blue Chip Investment Club.
He attended Lawrence In-
stitute of Technology and
received a bachelor's degree
in 1968. He received a
master's degree from Eastern
Michigan University in 1970.
Mr. Goosen is survived by
his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Sidney (Saundra) Goosen,
former Detroiters of New
York; and two brothers, Lee
and Ari, also of New York.
