nights, one of the five highest
figures in the world in terms
of length of stay.
Shoshani said that the cur-
rent crisis was the third in his
five-year tenure as head of
Israeli tourism from North
America. The first took place
during and after the Lebanon
war of 1982, but was over-
come quickly, he said,
through an advertising cam-
paign stressing Israel's
friendliness. Once the war
ended, the tourism rate
returned to normal.
The second crisis was the
aftermath of the "Achille
Lauro" ship hijacking by the
PLO in the fall of 1986, and
travelers, particularly from
Europe, were fearful of travel-
ing.
As for the current crisis,
Shoshani said that it is the
worst of the three because the
situation is the most pro-
tracted and the media have
been filled for months with
negative images of Israeli
soldiers beating Palestinians.
Experts believe that people
who have been to Israel before
are less concerned about the
safety factor; it is the poten-
tial first-time travelers who
are most worried about the
trip.

In Dispute

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Israel
Defense Force and the United
Nations troop command in
southern Lebanon are trying
to resolve a dispute that
resulted in a tense confronta-
tion between Israeli and
Norwegian soldiers. Maj.
Gen. Yossi Peled, the IDF
commander in the northern
sector, and Gen. Gustav
Eklund, commander of the
United Nations Interim Force
in Lebanon, met to seek a
compromise.
The IDF and UNIFIL give
conflicting accounts of the in-
cident, which was only the
latest in a long history of fric-
tion between the Israelis and
the U.N. peacekeeping force.
The IDF accused UNIFIL of
provocation when its
Norwegian contingent dis-
rupted roadwork inside the
southern Lebanon security
zone. The zone has been con-
trolled by the IDF and its
allied South Lebanon Army
since Israel's withdrawal
from Lebanon.
