NEWS Court Upholds Exemptions Jerusalem (JTA) — The High Court of Justice turned down an appeal by attorney Yehuda Ressler against the exemption of yeshivah stu- dents from army service, a practice that has been in ef- fect since the early days of the State of Israel. However, Justice Aharon Barak wrote in the ruling that the appellant did have a standing in the case, and that the issue was subject to a judicial ruling. The defense minister, said Barak, had authority to "defer" the enlistment of yeshivah students as long as he deemed fit, for whatever the defense minister's reason- ing. The exemption of yeshivah students has been a contro- versial issue, ever since Prime Minister and Defense Minis- ter David Ben-Gurion granted the first exemptions. MP Charges Britain Blew Up Survivors' Ships London (JTA) — A new British spy book written by Michael Allason, a Conser- vative member of Parliament who writes under the name Nigel West, contends that British secret service officers blew up nearly a dozen ships in which Jewish concentra- tion camp survivors were to be smuggled into Palestine in 1947.
