DR. RON RICE

PSYCHOLOGIST—

IRRATIONAL FEARS

If you have an irrational fear,
no matter what it may be, it can
make your life miserable until
you learn how to overcome it.
Some people dread the sight or
touch of a spider; others have a
morbid fear of heights. Phobias
such as these need not prevent
a person from leading a normal
life if he or she avoids the cause.
Some other irrational fears,
however, are not so easy to
avoid.
One example is a fear of con-
fined spaces, known as
claustrophobia. In extreme cases
this can make a person unable to
use cars, trains, elevators, or
planes. There are other phobias
that can make it almost impossi-
ble to lead a normal life. An ex-
ample of this is agoraphobia, or

the "Fear of Fear" or more ac-
curately, a dread of panic attacks.
This gradually reduces the
number of "safe places" a per-
son feels panic-free in and can
even result in never leaving the
house.
Today there are a number of
behavioral therapies which can
greatly reduce or eliminate
phobias giving relief to many
sufferers.
