funny thing happened
to Daniel Chudnof on
the way to his bar
mitzvah. Just prior to leaving
for the Soviet Union to try
and find his "twin,' Daniel
learned that the young man
and his family had already
received exit visas and were
living in Oak Park.
Daniel, son of Mel and
Nena Chudnof of West Bloom-
field, celebrated his bar mitz-
vah last Saturday at Temple
Kol Ami, with his twin, Ilya
Leytes, at his side. Ilya is the
son of Boris Leytes, a driver,
and Inna Leytes, a math and
physics teacher. Ilya has one
brother, Lev.
The Leyteses first applied to
emigrate in January 1979
and were refused in April
1979. The reason for their
refusal was unknown. Mean-
while, Leytes' mother, Bluma,
had previously been allowed
to leave the Soviet Union and
had been making her home in
Oak Park for the past nine
years.
Daniel's trip to the Soviet
Union was the result of an in-
vitation by Joel and Linda
Golden of West Bloomfield,
whose son Stewart is Daniel's
friend. Stewart, who will
celebrate his bar mitzvah
June 25 at Adat Shalom
Synagogue, was asked what
he wanted for a gift for his bar
mitzvah. He told his parents
he wanted to go to Russia to
try and meet his bar mitzva
twin.
Just as the Goldens and
Daniel were preparing to
leave last month for their trip
abroad, Daniel was notified
that Ilya and his family had
received permission to
emigrate and had been living
in Oak Park since November.
Prior to the trip to the Soviet
Union, the Detroiters were
briefed by the Friends of the
Soviet Jewry Education and
Information Center in West
Bloomfield.
Since learning - of the
Leyteses' move to Oak Park,
the Chudnofs invited them to
dinner at their home. "We
learned a lot from them and
they from us, " Mrs. Chudnof
said. Although the Russian
couple could not speak
English well, they could
understand what was being
said.
Daniel, meanwhile, taught
his Russian twin how to play
videogames.
Daniel's decision to twin his
bar mitzvah was part of a

family tradition. His sister,
Jenni, had twinned her bat
mitzvah, and his cousins had
linked their ceremonies with
other Russian teens. But, he
had another motivation. "We
have to look out for other peo-
ple," Daniel said. "Other peo-
ple don't have as much as us.
I'm sharing the opportunity."
Sharing is an important
concept at Temple Kol Ami.
One way it is promoted is
through the temple's Rodeph
Tzedek (Pursuer of Justice)
project. Created by the tem-
ple's spiritual leader, Rabbi
Norman Roman, congregants
are encouraged to perform
acts of kindness and then
report to the membership at
Shabbat morning services.
The purpose, Roman said, is
not for a congregant to
receive koved (glory) for help-
ing someone but to encourage
others to think of helping
their fellow man. "It is a com-
bination of teaching and shar-
ing for kids and adults," he
said. lb participate in the pro-
ject, children can pick from
twinning their b'nai mitzvah
with a Soviet Jewish youth,
from donating proceeds from
simchot to Mazon, the Jewish
hunger project, or from an ac-
tivity of their choice which
benefits other human beings.
The Chudnofs said they
were excited to have Daniel's
twin celebrate his bar mitz-
vah with him. According to
Mrs. Chudnof, "We were
pleased to have the whole ex-
perience."
The Goldens also were ex-
cited about their own ex-
perience, since their son has
been documented to be the
only U.S. Jewish child to ac-
tually meet his bar mitzvah
twin in the Soviet Union.
Although their intention was
to meet their son's twin, Alex-
