Junior Melanie Peltz earn- ed her varsity spot as a designated runner, but im- proved her skills during the season and may see more ex- tensive action next season. Collins, who played in 10 games after returning from a serious bout of food poisoning. Collins finished with eight hits in 35 at bats for a .242 average. In his best game, against Troy Athens, he hit a two-run triple and a game- tying, three-run homer in the seventh inning. Collins, says Groves coach Jim Crosby, "defensively did a very good job for us . . . He's a top-notch ballplayer." Sophomore pitcher Brian Feldman finished with a misleading 1-4 record in 31 innings with a team-leading 3.16 ERA. He struck out 18 hitters and walked eight. "There were some tough losses in there," says Crosby. "He's a really good pitcher." Feldman suffered two, one- run losses this season and had only one bad outing, ac- cording to Crosby. Movo Chargers Are All-League Southfield-Lathrup seniors Rochelle Kaplan and Karen Schwartz both earned all- Metro Suburban Activities Association honors this season. Kaplan was the team cap- tain. She batted .328 and drove home 16 runs as the starting catcher. Schwartz, the centerfielder, hit .417 with 15 RBI and 38 runs scored. She was voted to the Coaches' All-District team. The Chargers were 14-11 overall this season, 6-8 in the MSAA. Junior Jackie Scheuer, the leftfielder, was the team's rookieof-the-year, hitting .398 with 16 RBI and 38 runs scored. Senior rightfielder Aliza Grant hit .327 with 24 RBI. Third baseman Julie Blather, a senior, batted .238 with 17 RBI. Sophomore Stefanie Polsky played second base and hit .256 with 11 RBI. Fellow soph Nikki Kac- zander played pitcher and third base. She hit .194 with five RBI. On the mound she was 2-1 in 19 innings with a 4.79 ERA. The young squad lost many one and two-run games, ac- cording to coach Don Perry. "We basically suffered from inexperience," he said, ad- ding, "I was satisfied with the season. And I think the girls were, too. It was a very en- joyable season." Four To Try For Belts Four Jewish karate masters will undergo testing to ad- vance to a higher level on Sunday. The four will take their tests at the Maple/Drake Jewish Com- munity. Center's main gym from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Keith Fishman, one of the four, is trying going for a fourth degree black belt, as are Bruce Fishman and Stewart Schulman. Allen Hamer, going for his third degree black belt. Hamer faces a pre-set test, but the others will not, according to Keith Fishman. "I have no idea what to expect," says Fishman, whose test will in- clude some sparring. Boys Inspire Fund-Raiser Although Troy Amoco dealer Don Sherer organized the annual Amoco Dealers against Cystic Fibrosis Golf Invitationals, the event was inspired by Richie and Jimmy Varon. The Jewish brothers were junior high school classmates of Sherer's son, Jonathan. The two also suf- fered from cystic fibrosis. Richie Varon's death at age 19 in 1977 prompted the elder Sherer to organize a commit- tee to sponsor a golf tourna- ment for Amoco dealers and
