Round Table

Religious leaders from chur-
ches, synagogues, temples
and mosques will participate
in a religious weekend, in-
itiated by the Greater Detroit
Interfaith Round Table and
the A World of Difference pre-
judice reduction campaign of
the Anti-Defamation League
of B'nai B'rith on July 4.
A part of the International
Freedom Festival, uhe corn-
munitywide event will unite
all major religious groups in
an effort to improve relation-
ships between diverse ethnic,
racial and religious
communities.
Among those participating
are Rabbi A. Irving Schnipper
of Congregation Beth
Abraham-Hillel Moses; Rab-
bi Richard Hertz, rabbi
emeritus of Temple Beth El;
and Rabbi David Nelson of
Congregation Beth Shalom.

Synagogue
To Be Restored

Bonn (JTA) — The East Ger-
man Communist regime
seems prepared to finance the
restoration of the famous
Orienburgerstrasse Syna-
\
/
gogue, the largest and most
prestigious synagogue in
Berlin.
Ernst Honecker, the East
German leader, proposed at a
meeting with leaders of the
East Berlin Jewish communi-
ty last week that an interna-
tional panel and a foundation
be formed to oversee and fund
the restoration work. The
money would come largely
from the state.
Honecker's proposal is
understood to be a bid to
restore East Germany's im-
age, tarnished recently by
charges of anti-Semitism in
;- the state-controlled news
media. The accusation was
made by Rabbi Isaac Neu-
man, a retired American rab-
bi, who was hired to be the
religious leader of East Ger-
many's tiny Jewish communi-
ty and who abruptly left that
post recently.
