Drug Myth Continued from preceding page the West Bloomfield public school system to place Sue in the same treatment program Josh attended. West Bloomfield High School and Southfield High School have been nominated for a national award on drug education. Rosemary Thom- son, regional representative of the U.S. Department of Education, recently visited both schools as part of the selection process. Although Thomson commends their anti-drug campaigns, she says little is going on in drug education. "The problem (of drug abuse) is 10 times greater than everyone thinks," states Thomson. Just as there needs to be more drug education in the country, there needs to be more programs in the Jewish community. The present drug education in the Detroit Jewish community at syna- gogues and day schools is usually not part of the cur- riculum, but rather an enrichment program or seminar. According to Marvin Kasoff, educational director at Con- gregation Shaarey Zedek, there were a few programs but it is not now part of the curriculum. "We need to ex- pand our program," says Robert M. Lask, educational director at Temple Beth El. Guest speakers on alcohol and drug abuse have ap- peared at the temple. The programs at each in- stitution vary. Hillel Day School has curriculum guide- lines for drug education beginning in elementary school and continuing through junior high. "We give the kids basic information and knowledge on how to say `no to drugs,' " says Rabbi Robert Abramson, head- master of Hillel. "We do not have the problem in the school. I hope we are not being overly optimistic," says Rabbi Shmuel Lopin, Akiva headmaster. At the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization, students take a national non-use pledge to drugs. According to Jon Isenberg, assistant director BBYO Michigan Region, there are continuous preven- tion programs. But, Isenberg cautions, "Just because a pro- gram exists, it doesn't mean it's a good one." One of the newest programs in the community is Project Pride, which began two months ago in Farmington Hills and is an outgrowth of the Chabad Drug Rehab Center in Los Angeles. Pro- gram director Rabbi Chaim Bergstein is establishing an information and counseling center. He plans to go to area schools with a drug education program reinforcing pride in children's values and develop- ti ing self-esteem. "We provide free counseling for anyone who desires it," says Rabbi Bergstein, who has a staff that includes physicians and mental health personnel. As far as a Jewish treat- ment center goes, "It would be a re-duplication of ser- vices," believes Margaret Weiner, director of profes- sional services at Jewish Family Service. Weiner says that JFS can and does refer to hospitals as well as other family agencies in severe cases. In 1988, alcoholism and drug abuse among Jewish adolescents is a reality, not a myth. As director of JACS, Mitchell Wallik deals with this reality and states: "Cir- cumcision is no guarantee against addiction." 0 N LABRET JEWELERS ROWS NEST PARK +4 1 14 MILE ROAD ew York — The term spiritual healer usually brings to mind Christ images, voodoo cults and faith healings. But according to Florence horn, accredited spiritual healer and dedicated Jew, spiritual healing is in keeping with the teachings of Judaism and date back to the times of the Bible. lb help prove the validity of spiritual healing in Jewish law, as well as give accredita- tion to Jewish spiritual healers, the Jewish Associa- tion of spiritual Healers (JASH) was formed in Har- row, England in 1966 by Diane Martyn. Since then, the association has spread to Wales, Germany and Israel. A fifth and sixth chapter is now being opened in Leeds and North America, and Horn, 63, has been named director of the North American branch. Horn has been healing for about 12 years. "It's very
