a long-term campaign aimed
at her and her husband."
This incident appears to be
the first anti-Semitic mailing
made in Gallup's name,
Lobenthal said. Earlier in the
year, the same perpetrator
reportedly sent a letter to a
local newspaper, signing it
Carol Gallup and calling for
the establishment of more
gay bars.
Lobenthal said his office
has received many calls about
the anti-Semitic letter, which
he said appears to have had a
large mailing. He said those
receiving the letter include
Jewish institutions, churches
and Christian individuals,
many of whom called the
ADL office "outraged and
upset" by its contents.
A number of Jewish-owned
businesses, including a dia-
mond merchant, also got a
copy of the letter. The author
of the letter claims, "An ex-
ample of what happens when
the Jews take over a market
is like what happened to the
diamond market after 1948.
Believe it or not there was
once a time when diamonds
were affordable. Not since
Israel came into being,
however, (in 1948) Israel pro-
cesses 80 percent of the
world's diamonds."
The letter also describes
Meyer Lansky as "the Miami
Jewish Mafia boss" and the
Jewish Defense League as "a
terrorist organization!'
Lobenthal said the
writer probably took such
remarks from other publica-
tions rather than being well-
versed in anti-Semitism
himself. Supposed Jewish
connections with the drug in-
dustry and references to Lan-
sky and the JDL already have
appeared in many anti-
Semitic writings, he said.
The author of the letter also
claims to be writing a book
called, "Who's Really Behind
the Drug Trade, Perhaps the
CIA?" in which, he said, he
will include interviews with
noted figures to back his
claim that Jews are in control
of the economy. One of those
interviews will be with
"former CIA contract agent:
Richard Brenneky."
Brenneky, originally from
Oregon, claims to have ties to
the CIA and inside informa-
tion about drug trading and
the Nicaraguan Contra
rebels.
Sharon Basso, a spokesman
for the CIA, said the
organization "has no record of
any association" with
Brenneky.
The letter also describes
Dallas businessman H. Ross
Perot as supportive of its
claims that Jews are involved
in drugs.

Perot is out of the country
and could not be reached for
comment. Yet Mark
Briskman, North Texas-
Oklahoma regional director
for the ADL, said the
statements are false.
"I would be shocked beyond
belief to hear there's any
validity in such comments!"
Briskman said. He said
Perot's record is one of strong
support for the Jewish com-
munity and Israel.
The Detroit postal system
also is investigating the let-
ter, which bears a Royal Oak
postmark.
Michael O'Hara, U.S. postal
inspector in Detroit, said the
letter is one of only three or
four anti-Semitic ones he has
seen in the past 21/2 years. He
said hate mail usually falls
into one of three categories:
anti-Semitic, racist or
anti-gay.
Even when the authors of
such letters are found,
O'Hara said, they cannot be
prosecuted by postal
authorities because "there is
nothing illegal about what
they did. We can't do
anything unless the letter
threatens someone with
death or extortion. All we can
do if we catch them is say,
`Don't do it again! "

Emigre Jobs

and short-term assistance
program s
Initially, he said, the goal is
to find immediate employ-
ment for the new immigrants.
Preferably — but not always
— this will be in the worker's
field. Second, a long-term
position is sought.
Immigrants who need fur-
ther English-language train-
ing are urged to take classes
at the Jewish Community
Center.
Goodenough said the suc-
cess rate so far has been high.
The JVS has placed about 10
in new jobs in the last six
weeks.
"We're starting to see
results," Goodenough said.
