Chocloate
Influence

Washington — According to
a recent survey, the days of
three martini lunches in
Washington are gone! What
keeps members of the U.S. -4
Congress and their staffs 4
revved up these days is
chocolate. The study, con-
ducted by Karina Chocolate,
indicates that 84 percent of '
all members of congress
surveyed love chocolate. Only
10 percent of the 535 4
members surveyed did not
like chocolate.
Congressional staffers take
the lead, however, with 99 I
percent claiming to love
chocolate.
In the U.S. House of
Representatives, Republicans
love chocolate more than
Democrats, 87 percent to 80
percent. Congressman Clar-
ence E. Miller (R-Ohio) keeps
a stash of candy bars in a cof- -
fee can which he calls his
"supplies" and keeps it lock-
ed in a closet for quick
chocolate fixes.
Twenty-three precent of the
Republicans and 19 percent of
the Democrats request
chocolate as an afternoon
snack. Congressman James F. -4
Sensenbrenner (R-Wisc.) loves
chocolate so much that his
personal secretary often cat-
ches him eating it for
breakfast!
In the U.S. Senate, more
Republicans are again
chocophiles as compared to
their Democratic counter- 4
parts, 87'percent to 85 per-
cent. While campaigning in
1980, Senator Robert Dole (R.-
Kan.) experienced several
cancelled flights and hours of ,mg
delays, but was described as '61
"happy as a clam" when he
got his two chocolate bars
with almonds.
Twenty percent of all
senators request chocolate
bars as afternoon snacks from
their staffers.
Although Republicans love
chocolate more than
Democrats as a group,
Democrats are more pas-
sionate about their love for
chocolate. In the Senate, 11
percent of Democrats
surveyed were characterized
as "chocoholics" by their staf-
fers. Only 7 percent of
Republicans were termed the
same.
Senator George J. Mitchell
(D-Maine) "shares all gifts of . •10
food from constituents, except
chocolate," said a member of 1
his staff:
In the House, the same
results appeared. Seven per-
cent of Democrats as com-
pared to five percent of
Republicans were described
as "chocoholics."
