Histadrut To Pay 'Tribute
Sunday To Chana Michlin

Histadrut of Metropolitan
Detroit will pay tribute to one
of its founders and leaders,
Chana Michlin, on Sunday at
Farina's in Berkley.
Featured on the program as
guest speaker will be Eliezer
Rafaeli, executive vice presi-
dent of the National Commit-
tee for Labor Israel and
chancellor of Haifa Universi-
ty. A tribute to her will be
made by Ruth Miller, na-
tional annuity chairman of
NA'AMAT USA. Harriet
Goldman, accompanied by
Sonny Lipenholtz, will pre-
sent a musical interlude.
Chana Weintrobe Michlin
was born in Poland and im-
migrated to Detroit at age 13.
She was one of the organizers
of a Hebrew-speaking club,
where she met her husband.
She started the first Hebrew
kindergarten in the city.
Following World War I, she
helped organize within the
Labor Zionist movement the
People's Relief Organization
to help Jewish war sufferers.
At the same time, she helped
to organize the local Jewish
National Fund.

In 1917, Mrs. Michlin was
instrumental in organizing a
women's group within the
ranks of the Labor Zionist
movement called The Red
Magen David to work on
behalf and together with the
Jewish Legion, using the
Michlin home as an office and
a stop off for members of the
legion who passed through en
route to Halifax, N.S.

NA'AMAT), the first Pioneer
Women were drawn from the
young women she recruited to
help in the Red Magen David
service.
In 1956, she was selected to
attend the first World Zionist
Congress in Israel. She
counted among her friends
the late Prime Minister
Golda Meir, President and
Mrs. Zalman Shazar and the
first Prime Minister David
Ben-Gurion.
She has served as president
of the Pioneer Women's Coun-
cil, was an organizer of the
Women's Division of Israel
Bonds, a board member of the
Detroit Zionist Federation
and has long been an officer
and a member of the ex-
ecutive committee of
Histadrut.
Histadrut will announce
the establishment of the
Chana Michlin Perpetual
Scholarship Fund at the af-

Wayne State University
Center for Judaic Studies in
conjunction with the
Midrasha College of Jewish
Studies, a division of United
Hebrew Schools, announces a
summer institute for
teachers. •
It will meet on Tuesdays
and Thursdays for three
weeks on Tuesday and June
23, 28, 30 and July 5, 7. At 9
a.m., teachers will be intro-
duced to co-operative
Learning.
Dr. Barbara Potter, prin-
cipal, and instructors Rebec-
ca Smith and Karen Smith of
Pattengill Elementary School
in the Berkley School
District, will provide practical
strategies for helping
students learn co-operatively

from one another in groups.
One credit in pedagogy may
be earned through the
Midrasha towards religious
school teaching certification.
This is open to all teachers.
At 10:30 a.m., Dr. Peter
Machinist, associate professor
of biblical and ancient studies
at the University of
Michigan, will explore
biblical texts and the history
of ancient Israel with
students. Three Midrasha
credits toward the Master of
Hebrew Literature degree
can be earned as well as one
credit at Wayne State.

preceding the first session,
