If the bills are signed into law, Michigan would become the fifth state that would allow religious objections to halt autopsies. New York, Ohio, New Jersey and Califor- nia have implemented similar laws. The law would obligate medical examiners to consult with family members or other survivors. before performing autopsies unless the death was a homicide or a possible threat to public health. If the medical examiner is not satisfied with a survivor's ob- jection, the doctor could ap- peal the decision in the cir- cuit courts. Regulations for doctors are more strict. Michigan physi- cians need written consent from the surviving spouse, next of kin, parent or guar- dian before performing an autopsy. Officials for Sinai, Beaumont and Providence hospitals said their respective policies on performing autop- sies are consistent with the state law. 'IDF Violated Tear Gas Rules' rIbl Aviv (JTA) — A team of doctors made public a report accusing the Israel Defense Forces of flagrant violations of its own regulations gover- ning the use of tear gas to disperse rioters in the Gaza Strip. The doctors charged that many of the Palestinian casualties from the beginning of the uprising, last December, until April were the result of tear gas fired in closed areas. It caused at least 30 pregnant women to miscarry, the doctors claimed. The team of six doctors was organized by Knesset Member Dedi Zucker of the left-of-center Citizens Rights Movement to investigate medical conditions in the Gaza Strip. They had the full cooperation of the IDF. Arab Exports Israeli Products Tel Aviv (JTA) — An enter- prising Lebanese living in Israel is operating a regular oceangoing cargo service bet- ween Haifa and the Beirut area, the newspaper Davar reported. The three small vessels owned by Amin Haj, a Shiite merchant who makes his home in Nahariya, carry Israeli agricultural products to Lebanon. From there, some of them reach other Arab countries that officially boycott Israel, Davar said. About 90 percent of the cargo carried originates in Israel and has an estimated value of several 'million dollars annually. Lebanese produce accounts for 10 per- cent of the freight. 'Israeli Police Assault Press' Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Foreign Press Association has accused the Israeli police of physically assaulting jour- nalists performing their duties and has demanded a stop to it. The press association held a news conference in Jerusalem Tuesday — an unusual step for reporters — and gave details of incidents of physical assaults by police on its members. They called on Police Minister Haim Barley to investigate and punish those responsible. Association chairman Bob Slater of Time magazine said there were between 100 and 150 incidents of physical at- tacks on foreign journalists reported between last December, when the Palesti- nian uprising in the West Bank and Gaza Strip began, and early April. Other association members complained of public hostili- ty toward foreign cor- respondents. Mideast Mission Ends Geneva (JTA) — A special U.N. committee investigating Israeli human rights prac- tices toward Palestinians returned from a 12-day fact- finding mission to the Middle East with damning informa- tion, all of it obtained from Palestinians. Since the committee was set up by the U.N. General Assembly in December 1968, Israel has refused to allow it access to the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Golan Heights, territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War. The Israelis accuse the com- mittee of a built-in anti-Israel bias. As a result, the commit- tee takes testimony from Palestinians in Arab coun- tries where no refutation is offered.
