Ed and John Jonna, who own the Merchant of Vino shops, have, by stocking the most unusual ingredients, made it possible for people interested in gourmet cuisine to produce lavish meals. Every time I go into one of their stores I feel like I'm in Alladin's cave. Shopping in one of their stores is my favorite form of relaxation. I'm amazed at the rapid completion of so many pro- jects in the greater Detroit area — specifically in the hotel industry. Contrary to general belief, Detroit is very much alive, growing and prosperous. "We have four beautiful and distinct seasons, and after ex- periencing periods of weeks where it rained every day, I can't wait for that magical time when the trees start to change their colors and then for that first snowfall which carpets the countryside and makes one feel like we are liv- ing in a postcard. "We have a great Jewish community in Detroit that supports Israel to the utmost and I really looked forward to returning to that kind of at- mosphere because in England, the Jewish com- munity has become assimilated and at times is more English than the English. I really missed the Jewish influence and identi- ty of the Detroit metropolitan area, its delis, shops, synagogues and Lincoln Center Barber Shop, where one can get a fine haircut and a lesson on the KGB and Rus- sian life before Glasnost. "People who criticize and badmouth Detroit do not real- ly know or appreciate this great city and all that it has to offer. The very first thing I did on my return to Detroit was to buy a Detroit Free Press at the airport, and turn to Bob Talbert's column to catch up on what's happen- ing. A great lover of food with an exquisite palate, Bob is truly Detroit's ambassador at large. "I look forward to many years of living and catering in Detroit — my favorite place in the world."
