Their existence is no obstacle to the initiation of negotiations as former Presi- dent Jimmy Carter and others would have us believe; rather, it is the settlements which have forced Hussein to recognize that if he wants to regain the West Bank he must enter negotiations before "creeping annexation" reaches its logical conclusion. The settlements are an obstacle because any treaty must find a way to accom- modate them. There will be no replay of Yamit where Israeli soldiers forcibly evicted Jewish settlers. Some settlers undoubtedly will move back within the borders Israel agrees to, but the rest would have to be guaranteed their rights in Jordan or Palestine. Today, Jordan has a blatant- ly anti-Semitic law which prevents Jews from living in the country. It is, in fact, one of the few countries in which Jews are not permitted to live. That law is an obstacle to peace. Shamir may not appear as flexible as some Americans would like, but he does repre- sent the views of a substan- tial proportion of his consti- tuents. Moreover, those views are consistent with United Nations Resolution 242. Rather than browbeat the prime minister over his refusal to say the world "land for peace" it would be far more productive to look for solutions to some of the substantive issues which pose the real obstacles to peace. Anne Pollard Seeks Proper Medical Care New York (JTA) — At- torneys for Anne Henderson- Pollard filed an appeal in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Monday seeking proper medical treat- ment and/or commutation of her sentence to time served. Henderson-Pollard, 28, wife of convicted spy Jonathan Pollard, suffers from severe gastrointestinal disorders, allegedly exacerbated by her incarceration in federal prisons. Her attorneys say in theii appeal that she has received grossly inadequate medical care, has lost 60 pounds and is in almost constant pain. Anne Henderson-Pollard has served 18 months of two concurrent five-year sentences as an accessory after the fact to her husband's possession of national defense documents and conspiracy to receive embezzled govern- ment property. Jonathan Pollard is serving a life sentence for spying for Israel. Henderson-Pollard's father, Bernard Henderson, said her attorneys, Nathan Der- showitz and Victoria Eiger, have been trying unsuccessfu- ly to allow her private physi- cian to treat her. Henderson said that on May 9 his daughter was transferred from federal prison in Lexington, Ky., to a federal prison in Rochester, Minn., where the Mayo Clinic is located. Since then she has been given only three tests at the clinic, and her personal physi- cian before her arrest, Dr. Michael Goldberg, who prac- tices in Chicago, has not been alowed to visit her, Hender- son said. Michael Dukakis over the Rev. Jesse Jackson. According to Los Angeles Times exit polls, 20 percent of the Jewish voters last week cast their ballots for Jackson, 73 percent for Dukakis, and the remainder for Sens. Albert Gore (D.-Thnn.) and Paul Simon (D.-Ill.), who were listed on the ballot although they are no longer active can- didates. The New York Times/CBS News poll, based on question- naires filled out by 1,947 voters throughout California, shows only 14 percent of the Jewish vote going to Jackson, and 81 percent going to Dukakis. In New Jersey, the opposi- tion to Jackson's candidacy was even stronger. Only 4 per- cent of the Jewish voters cast ballots for Jackson.
