Emily has been active in the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization and United Synagogue Youth pro- gram and is also a member of the National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Dr. Elliot and Sharon Burns of Armada, Mich. Deborah Schlussel was presented with the Robert and Gertrude Berman Judaic Studies Scholarship. Deborah has been chosen as a delegate to the 1988 Republican Na- tional Convention. She is pur- suing a double major in Judaic studies and political science at the University of Michigan. She is the daughter of Dr. Herschel and rIbby Schlussel of Southfield. The Sarah F. Gorrelick Camp Ramah Scholarship was presented to Jonathan Knoll. The scholarship is funded by the Sisterhood of Congregation Beth Achim and the tribute fund that was established in Sarah Gor- relick's memory. Jonathan, who is a student at Hillel Day School, will attend a four- week session at Camp Ramah. The Tepman Youth Scholar- ships were awarded to Nathaniel Berman, Loren Sherman and Jacob Shiman- sky. This scholarship has been established in memory of Louis Tepman, father of Jerry Tepman and Sally Lip- pitt, on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Only applicants who are actively involved in the Beth Achim Youth Pro- gram are eligible for this scholarship. NCSY- Board Picks. Detroiters Noam Koenigsberg and Esther Bodzin were elected to positions on the National Conference of Synagogue Youth's Central East regional board. Koenigsberg, an 11th grader at Akiva Hebrew Day School, was elected vice presi- dent of education. Bodzin, a senior at Oak Park High School, was elected vice presi- dent of organization. Both will hold office for one year. Other honors received by Detroiters at the convention were: Outstanding Chapter President, Ari Schochet; Meritorious Service to NCSY, Sarah Berkower and Noam Koenigsberg; Torah Achieve- ment Award, Naomi Berkove and Esther Bodzin; NCSY'er of the Year, Past Regional President Julie Kowalsky. The Young Israel Teens Chapter of NCSY received an award for outstanding chapter development. The annual national NCSY convention will take place June 23-27 at the La Vista Hotel in South Fallsburg, N.Y: The theme for the convention will be "Arboim LBena, 40 for Understanding: Out of the Wilderness the Challenge of Freedom." Student Places In Math Contest The Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics an- nounces that Alexander Franklin placed 21st in the top 25 eighth graders in the state of Michigan junior high/middle school math- ematics contest. Alex is the son of Elayne Franklin of Southfield and Roman Franklin, of West Bloomfield. He is an eighth grader at Birney Middle School in Southfield.
