State Sen. Jack Faxon

up, I'd like to be surrounded
by that same kind of environ-
ment, that wonderful sense of
compassionate excitement?'
In 1964, on his arrival in
Lansing, Faxon lost no time
in beginning to work to pro-
mote the arts in Michigan.
The next year, he founded the
Michigan Council for the
Arts.
"The Kennedys were in the
White House then, and they
were very much interested in
having the states do more to
advance their own resources
and activities in the arts. At
the Constitutional Conven-
tion in 1961, I had tried to in-
clude some promotion of the
arts, but that had pretty
much failed.
"So, when I got to the
legislature, I had another op-
portunity to do something. A
state arts agency needed to be
set up, and it was a matter of
convincing the Appropria-
tions Committee, which I was
a member of. Initially, we got
$50,000 for the council. These
days, there's about
$10,000,000 set aside?'
Since coming to the State
Senate, Faxon has served as
chairman of the Joint
Legislative Committee on the
Arts, a special group of
legislators who work to fur-
ther the advancement of the
creative arts in Michigan
through increased funding
and promotion of arts
legislation.
Recently, he has also work-
ed to establish the Michigan
Arts in Public Places pro-
gram. Begun about three
years ago, the program is now
involved in its initial major
project — the new State
Library and Archives
Building, opening later this
year in Lansing.
"The Michigan Arts in
Public Places program was
established so that new public
buildings in Michigan won't
be gray, prison-like struc-
tures, but will be enhanced by
art, and exhibit a sense of
