our dancers' schedules. We're
a daytime group — we never
have rehearsals at night."
Berg said she feels that the
future of dance is strongly
dependent upon looking
backward. She sits on the
board of directors of the
Paradigm Art Center, an
avant garde Detroit group
which does experimental
dance. In addition to her work
at the Jewish Center
teaching dance classes and
directing the Festival
Dancers, she teaches dance
history at Marygrove College.
"Dance history is my passion.
A good dancer cannot just
know steps. A dancer must
know the history of the art
form."
Jackier, who is politically
active in the Jewish com-
munity, sees Israeli folkdance
as "a way of rising above
political differences and
reaching out to the Arab and
other non-Jewish com-
munities." She feels joint-
workshops could provide this
opportunity.
Unfortunately, she ad-
mits, even within our own
community Israeli folkdance
"is not the thing right now."
But her goal is to change al
that. "Israeli folkdance is an
expression of our Jewish
heritage. It's physical. It's
good for your body, and it's
good for your soul."
Freedom Fest
Kicks Off
The 1988 International
Freedom Festival has begun
and will continue through Ju-
ly 4.
Underscoring the interna-
tional flavor of the festival are
events that can be enjoyed in
Detroit and Windsor. Includ-
ed are the Wheels of Freedom
Antique Car Show and
Parade; the International
Race; and the Tug Across the
Detroit river, which will pit
teams from Detroit and
Windsor.
The Freedom Festival
fireworks, a signature event
for the festival, are scheduled
for June 30, with an alternate
date of July 1. Detroit
highlights are "A Fort Night,"
an evening of fun and enter-
tainment at Historic Fort
Wayne; Cinema Canada, a
showing of Canada's award-
winning films at the Detroit
Institute of Arts; a Children's
Day celebration in the
Cultural Center and free
entertainment on Hart Plaza.
