So convincingly non-Jewish
was my professor that when
he revealed his tribal
membership to me in the
course of a conversation I
stared at him in disbelief.
When I spread the news to
my classmates, the typical
reaction was surprise.
"Funny, but he doesn't
seem Jewish."
Obviously, we all carry
mental images of how certain
ethnic groups should appear
or behave. Think "WASP"
and a specific image—well-
groomed, understated, emo-
tionally reserved—comes to
mind. Think "JAP" and
another mental picture is
formed, this one not at all
flattering.
From tuning an ear into
conversations as of late, I
realize that it is disingenuous
to claim that these Jewish
stereotypes have been manu-
factured by the gentile world;
the fact is that we have
created these categories all by
ourselves. In an established
community of mostly Asken-
azic Jews, one will hear put-
downs of the Sephardim who
have recently moved in. The
Orthodox will refer to the
Reform as "deformed" and
the Reform will claim that the
Orthodox are a bunch of
fanatics.
These value-laden generali-
zations obviously serve to
divide and stir up enmity.
But what about the more am-
biguous stereotypes—Jewish
mother, Yeshiva student, nice
Jewish girl? And what of the
flattering archetype, such as
the one mentioned by Fritz?
Just last week, I stood on
a midtown Manhattan corner
desperately attempting to
hail a cab to Grand Central
Station.
"You going to Williams-
burg?"
Whatever gave him that
idea? "No, I need Grand Cen-
tral. And hurry. My train
leaves in 20 minutes."
"Relax," my cabbie said,
starting the meter. After a
moment he looked in the rear
view mirror again and said,
"Westchester."
"What?" What is this guy
talking about?
"You live in Westchester?"
"Yes," I reply between
clenched teeth. "How could
you tell?"
"Well," he said, maintaining
his eye contact with me. "You
just look like a nice Jewish
girl."
"Why?" I shot back, "be-
cause I am carrying shopping
bags?"
The driver looked at me
quizzically. "No," he said,
"You just have a warm
Jewish look."
