Tel Aviv (JTA) — A majori-
ty of Israelis now favor an in-
ternational conference to
open Middle East peace nego-
tiations and would agree to
talks with the Palestine
Liberation Organization, ac-
cording to the results of a
newly released public opinion
survey conducted by the
Dahaf Research Institute for
Tel Aviv University's Jaffee
Center For Strategic Studies.
The Institute surveyed
1,850 Jewish adults between
late December 1987 and ear-
ly January 1988, the period
when the Palestinian upris-
ing in the West Bank and
Gaza Strip was escalating
rapidly.
However, the poll also show-
ed a swing by Israelis toward
right-wing attitudes. It show-
ed, for example, that 57 per-
cent of Israelis favor annexa-
tion of the West Bank and
Gaza Strip, compared to 54
percent in a poll conducted in
1986.

searchers working in 19 dif-
ferent countries located more
than 10,000 pages of material
on the Waldheim case, much
of which they claim is newly
uncovered and unpublished.
Evidence against Waldheim
was presented in front of a
panel of five respected judges
from various Western coun-
tries. The eight-day hearing
was to culminate with the
judges rendering a verdict on
whether Waldheim "wrongly
participated in acts which
were contrary to the interna-
tional laws of war" while
serving as a German army in-
telligence officer in the
Balkans during World War II.
The judges' verdict, which
has been kept secret, was to
be broadcast during the pro-
gram. The program is a co-
production of HBO and
Thames Thlevision in London.
However, the head of the
Justice Department's Office
of Special Investigations,
Neal Sher, criticized the
television trial as being
"troubling." Sher declined the
request of HBO researchers
for any information the OSI
had on Waldheim.
