Last week another Israeli-appointed official, the mayor of Ramallah, quit his position. No suspects have been ar- rested for the attempted murder of Tawil. Several West Bank residents who heard of the at- tack said that Tawil should have heeded the demand to resign and that his stabbing would serve as "a lesson." Rabbis Back Surrogate Ban New York (JTA) — Rabbis participating in a New York state bioethics task force sup- ported the panel's endorse- ment of a ban on surrogate motherhood contracts. In recommending legislation that would prohibit payments to surrogates and bar sur- rogacy brokers from operating in the state, the New York State Task Force on Life and the Law has taken "a proper stand," Rabbi A. James Rudin, interreligious affairs director of the American Jewish Committee, said in a statement last week. A second rabbi on the 26-member panel, Rabbi J. David Bleich of Yeshiva Uni- versity, said that he essen- tially agreed with the recom- mendations. The panel did not call for a total ban on surrogacy ar- rangements, and "would still permit surrogacy arrange- ments when they are un- disputed and when they do not involve payment of a fee to a surrogate," explained Rudin. Teens Negative About Gays New York (JTA) — Jewish teenagers polled about their biases joined other groups in reacting negatively toward gay people, someties vicious- ly and with threats of violence, according to a recent survey. About half of the Jewish respondents disapproved of having a gay person move in- to the neighborhood. Other groups surveyed — blacks, whites, hispanics, Asians and native Americans — rated a potential gay neighbor even lower. In cross-tabulating the responses of blacks and Jews toward each other, only 86 percent of the blacks thought it would be good for a Jew to move into the neighborhood, while 95 percent of the Jews approved of a black person moving in.
