more than 800,000 Jews were
saved through discreet but
spirited efforts of the pope
and the church.
Pope Pius was able to have
the most influence in coun-
tries in which there was a
papal nuncio, a high propor-
tion of Catholics in the
population and in countries
not entirely under the control
of the Nazis, such as parts of
France, Bulgaria, Slovakia,
and Hungary.
For example, Father
Graham said, Pius was able
to exert influence on the
government of Italy because
Mussolini was not sym-
pathetic to Hitler's war
against the Jews. Thus, com-
paratively few Jews were
deported from Italy during
the war. Had the pope public-
ly called for Mussolini to
resist Hitler's orders, Father
Graham said, "Mussolini, as
a matter of pride, would have
gone along with Hitler."
And on several occasions,
Pope Pius made veiled but
nevertheless pointed
criticisms of Hitler's actions
against the Jews. The pope's
Christmas message of 1941
and 1942 elicited praise from
the New York Times which
described the pope as "a lone-
ly voice crying out of the
silence of a continent."
By contrast, captured Nazi
documents reveal that the
German secret service noted
that through those messages
Pius had "repudiated the Na-
tional Socialist New Euro-
pean Order," and that by
"clearly speaking on behalf of
the Jews . . . he is virtually
accusing the German people
of injustice toward the Jews
and makes himself the
mouthpiece of the Jewish war
criminals."
Pius XII's contributions
were widely recognized at the
time and for years after. The
tide of opinion changed
drastically with Hochhuth's
play in 1963.
Even then, however,
Hochhuth did not go
unanswered. Mangano noted
that Geno LeVai, the only
foreign Jew invited to the
Eichmann trial, "explicity
rebuked Hochhuth," as did
six diplomats to the Holy See
during World War II from
France, Japan, Sweden,
Finland, Germany and Great
Britain., When "The Deputy"
was performed in London, the
East End Playbill contained
a rebuttal by Sir Francis
D'Arcy Osburne.
Nevertheless, the notion
that Pius was silent and indif-
ferent to the plight of the
Jews flourished. "Most people
have not seen the
documented facts," Mangano
said.
