FRIDAY, JUNE 10, 1988 r- 1 Jewish Senators Continued from Page 6 of any potential Republican challenger." One of Metzenbaum's pro- blems is that Voinovich may win Metzenbaum's tradi- tional urban base of support in Cleveland, analysts said. Vice President George Bush received $5,000 from Na- tional PAC, which led the 17 PACs with $377,500 in cam- paign contributions through March 31. Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis, the likely Democratic nominee, does not accept PAC money. Gersten said Lautenberg "is in deep trouble." The Republican challenger, Brig. Gen. Pete Dawkins, a former Heisman Trophy winner and Rhodes Scholar, "has made remarkable progress not only in New Jersey but in the Jewish community in New Jersey and around the coun- try," Gersten said. Neither Dawkins nor Voinovich nor Dawkins received any money from the 17 PACs. Amitay predicted that the race "could be extremely tough" for Lautenberg. Another analyst said that New Jersey has been voting Republican in recent presi- dential elections, which could help Dawkins. In other races, Sen. David Durenberger (R-Minn.), who is being opposed by Hubert "Skip" Humphrey III, a Democrat, has a "healthy lead," Gersten said. Durenberger received $59,000 from 10 pro-Israel PACs, while Humphrey received a mere $1,500 from the National Bipartisan PAC. Despite its name, that PAC gave all of its $13,500 in con- tributions to Democratic candidates. In Rhode Island, Lt. Gov. Richard Licht, a Democrat who is a veteran fund-raiser for the United Jewish Appeal, has received $84,500 from 14 of the PACs, more than any other candidate. He is trying to unseat Sen. John Chafee (R-R.I.), who did not receive any money from the PACs. Gersten said pro-Israel PACs are making a "mistake" in providing massive support to Licht against Chafee, even though Chafee's 1982 re- election victory was the closest that year in which a challenger lost to an incum- bent. He said targeting Chafee to that degree would only make sense if he was an "avowed op- ponent" of Israel. Chafee is a former secretary of the navy. Amitay said that Chafee's visit to Israel earlier this year "reinforced (the senator's) negative image in the pro- Israel community." Gersten predicted that "Chafee's going to be re- elected" and said the coali- tion is introducing him to key Jewish leaders and giving him access to the group's leadership. Another analyst defended pro-Israel PAC support of Licht, saying Chafee has a poor record, that he has been okay on foreign aid and poor on arms sales. He did note that Licht has raised more money than Chafee, which he said is a strong indicator of ability to win. In California, Republican Sen. Pete Wilson is "running hard to get Jewish votes" in his race against Lt. Gov. Leo McCarthy, a Democrat, Ger- sten said. Wilson had received $25,800 from seven pro-Israel PACs through March 31, while McCarthy's campaign had not received any funding. McCarthy did receive $6,000 from the Multi-Issue PAC, which was formed as a reac- tion to the single-issue pro- Israel PACs. Of the $49,000 awarded by Multi-Issue PAC through March 31, only $1,000 went to a Republican candidate — Sen. Lowell Weicker (R- Conn.). By comparison, Republicans received close to 30 percent of the contribu- tions made by the pro-Israel PACs. Although Weicker is being challenged by the state's Jewish attorney general Joseph Lieberman, a Demo- crat, the PACs are sticking with Weicker, having given him $60,000 through March 31. In Nebraska, Gov. Bob Ker- rey, a Democrat, will challenge Republican Sen. David Karnes, who was ap- pointed to complete the term of Democratic Sen. Edward Zorinsky, a Jew, who died in 1987. Washington PAC awarded Kerrey $5,000 for the general election, while National PAC gave Karnes $5,000 for the Republican primary, which he won. Richard Altman, executive director of National PAC, said it has not yet decided whether to stick with Karnes in the general election. Other incumbents who have received large sums from the 17 pro-Israel PACs are: Sens. Jeff Bingaman (D- N.M), $70,500; James Sasser (D-Tenn.), $49,000; and George Mitchell (D-Maine), $46,500, none of whom is fac- ing a tough re-election cam- paign. One analyst defended such support as valuable because the PACs are "giving to a winner." Jewish Telegraphic Agency
