struggle and a growing resis-
tance to the language of
compromise.
Grossman is a slight, in-
tense man. In a group or one-
on-one, his speech is filled
with the kinds of vivid,
disturbing images that made
his book bristle with emo-
tional energy. He avoids the
dry argot of diplomacy; he
gives the impression that he'd
far prefer talking about how
Israel's status as an occupy-
ing power has affected his
own emotions than about the
details of an international
peace conference.
He lacks one basic quality
of most authors on tour—the
craving for attention from the
press. He avoids interviews.
When cornered by a reporter,
he is polite, but constantly
looking for avenues of escape.
Despite his newfound fame,
he gives the impression that
he would like to fade back in-
to the anonymous comfort of
his previous existence as a
serious novelist.
"What I really want to do
is get back to Israel and write
for 70 hours a week," he said
in an interview before his
speech to the New Israel
Fund group. "Talking about
this is very, very draining."
Grossman insisted that his
criticisms of Israeli policy do
not represent a disregard for
the dangers that surround
that country, or that his abili-
ty to see Palestinian torment
blinds him to the harshness of
their actions or their cause.
Like critics on the Right, he
agreed that a primary goal of
many participants in the re-
cent disturbances has been
the complete destruction of
Israel. And still, he argued,
there is no choice but negotia-
tion and compromise.
"There is no other conflict
in the world now where one
side openly declares that it
wants to exterminate the
other side entirely. I hear the
calls of the young Pales-
tinians for the eradication of
Israel. But Israel is strong; I
suspect we are not allowing
ourselves to admit that our
existence is not at mortal
danger right now. There is
room for maneuver, but we
are not allowing ourselves to
admit this."

Grossman spends a good
deal of time talking about
what he sees as Israel's
distorted concept of security.
By focusing exclusively on
military might, he said, Israel
ignores the other foundations
of security—including the
loose collection of variables
other observers call "moral
fiber."
"We have lost our confi-
dence because we confused
our concepts," he said. "We
called this huge military
machine 'security,' but we

were wrong. Instead of using
our army to reach some
higher goal, the army itself
became the goal. On the 40th
anniversary of our indepen-
dence, the only symbol we
chose to represent this
celebration was a massive
military parade."
This distortion, he said, has
stamped its impression on
every area of Israeli society.
"We are not solving our own
problems. In the United
States, 19 of 20 Jews go to
college; only 4 in 20 go in
Israel. We don't have a writ-
ten constitution because of
the 'security situation.' We
have no laws to guarantee
freedom of speech or freedom
of religion. And so there's a
growing group in Israel that
feels alienated from the
government because of what
Israel has been doing."
The narrow focus on mili-
tary security, he told the au-
dience in Washington, hard-
ens the lines of the conflict on
both sides. "We are in a twin
trap, we and the Palestinians.
We have left ourselves only

"So we have
people on both
sides, doomed to
translate every
human condition
into the language
of fear, conflict,
suspicion and
survival."

two possibilities—to be the
conqueror or the conquered,
the oppressor or the op-
pressed. The oppressed no
longer think about a new
order with peace and justice,
but how to become the op-
pressor himself. And the cur-
rent occupier thinks that any
talk of compromise im-
mediately puts him in mortal
danger."
Both sides dream impos-
sible dreams, he said. "Our
Prime Minister dreams only
of postponing any solution,
the Gush Emunim dreams of
expanding territory. The Left
in Israel dreams of running
away from the Ibrritories im-
mediately. And the hallucina-
tions of the Arabs involving
building a new state to re-
place Israel. Nobody bothers
himself with reality, with the
troubles of the other side.
Everybody is standing out of
history, out of reality."
Events in Israel since
December, when the stones
and the bullets began to fly,
have only confirmed the
awesome pessimism that
spawned The Yellow Wind.
Grossman's intensive seven-
month odyssey through the
West Bank, which began as a
