The cross was first erected
in 1966 at the Camp H.M.
Smith marine base, near
Pearl Harbor, for an Easter
sunrise service. It has since
remained as a memorial to
Americans who died or are
missing in Vietnam and is
maintained at government
expense. After the Jewish
community of Hawaii com-
plained to the navy in 1985,
Admiral T. E. Flynn, the
navy's judge advocate
general, said it should be
removed as a violation of the
U.S. Constitution. But he was
overruled by Gen. P.X. Kelley,
then commandant of the
Marine Corps.

'Moslems Erase
Jewish Past'
Jerusalem (JTA) — • Two
Likud Knesset members
charged Tuesday that the
Wakf, the Moslem body in
charge of Islamic shrines on
the Temple Mount are
deliberately erasing all traces
of Jewish history on that site,
where the Second Temple
once stood.
Dov Shilansky, chairman of
the Knesset Interior Commit-
tee, and committee member
Ovadia Eli, visited the Tem-
ple Mount for several hours,
in order, they said, to
demonstrate Israeli
sovereignty.
Shilansky and Eli charged
that the Wakf was construct-
ing buildings on the site and
planting trees and flowers,
"all aimed at erasing any
trace of the Jewish past on
the Temple Mount."
They also accused the
Moslems of building a new
mosque on the mount, a
charge refuted by the Moslem
religious authorities in the
past.

French Visit
Paris (JTA) — President
Chaim Herzog of Israel will
pay an official visit to France
later this year, at the invita-

Mitterrand.
According to the announce-
ment last week, it will be the
first state visit by a president
of Israel to France, and of-
ficials of both countries say it
will symbolize their close
relations.
Herzog will be reciprocat-
ing Mitterand's visit to Israel,
which took place in March
1982.
