for Israel and instead spen-
ding as much as possible for
Diaspora Jewry, particularly
to enhance Jewish educa-
tional, religious, and family-
preserving services.
In my experience, many
members of the donor elite
and many senior American
professional "apparachniks"
running the UJA and the
campaigns for Israel are
among the least learned and
Jewishly educated in
America. Many of these
donors have substituted
charity for Judaism and
"humanism" for
sophisticated systematic
Jewish and Hebrew
education.
Apart from the many
Israeli political personalities
benefiting from the present
Diaspora-Agency ar-
rangements, the average
Israeli has no love for the
Agency, no commitment to it,
and would not miss it. Israelis
generally have no sense of at-
tachment or appreciation for
what the donors are trying to
do in Israel. One major excep-
tion is the few Project
Renewal neighborhoods
where a handful of local
residents have superb rela-
tionships with several ex-
tremely committed donors.
No words are more
treasured by preservers of the
status quo than "realistic,"
"pragmatic," and "program-
matic." These, of course, are
relative terms, for one man's
realism is another man's
radicalism. Reconceptualiz-
ing the philanthropic connec-
tion between Israel and the
Diaspora communities is a
very sensitive, difficult under-
taking which tampers with
values, power, and communal
structures built up with great
labor over many decades.
Basically, there are two pro-
totype approaches, each of
which offers variations on the
same theme. One model in-
volves cessation of federation
fund-raising for Israel and
total use of campaign funds
for local and national Jewish
causes. The second model in-
volves continuation of federa-
tion fund-raising for Israel
and local needs but a radical
reform in the governance of
the Israel-bound share.
In preparation for this arti-
cle, I wrote a letter to friends
and. Jewish leaders in the
United States asking what
they would do if the Jewish
community federations gave
all the income from the UJA
campaign to local and na-
tional Jewish programs.
Their response was first of
shock, then elation, increduli-
ty, and tachless — dreaming
about concrete proposals.
Everyone thought the wind-

Thinking about buying a hot graphics computer to liven up your business
presentations? Before you make any costly snap decisions, you owe it to
yourself to stop and look at the Commodore ® Amiga 2000. It handles
advanced graphic design, stunning 3-D animation and pro-quality video
effects at about half the cost of a Mac II. And once you've seen an Amiga
electronic slideshow in 4096 colors, you'll appreciate how stark and finite the
black and white Mac SE can be. So for the high-impact, affordable alter-
native to a Mac, make your next leap to a Commodore Amiga 2000 dealer.
