series of reports for the Israeli
weekly Koteret Rashit, was
completed well before the
uprising began. Although he
catalogued the bitterness
that has become a basic part
of the uprising, he failed to
predict it.
Recent events, he said, have
amplified his sense of urgen-
cy. 'Two or three years ago I
would not have stood before
an audience, saying we are
trapped, we are both prison-
ers of our history. Two or
three years ago I would have
thought it was immoral to
come and tell you we were
paralyzed. Right now, after
writing The Yellow Wind,
after living through this
book, I am afraid that we are
running out of time. Maybe
we are already too late. But
maybe now it is a time for a
redefinition of the situation."
Grossman refrains from
talking about the specifics of
the peace process. He makes
no claims to be a politician or
a diplomat; the role he has
carved out for himself is that
of the involved observer, the
emotional lightning rod sen-
sitive to the overabundance of
passions swirling around the
Middle East.
"I'm not speaking about
imposing or forcing a solu-
tion," he said. "I am talking
about making us and the
Palestinians sit together and
look into each other's eyes.
We've developed a hollow
look; we don't see each other.
If we chose only the way of
survival, that is the way of
death. We must act in opposi-
tion to our nature, to our well-
developed instinct for sur-
vival. Those who think this
situation can go on forever
are the dangerous people."
His torment over the cur-
rent deadlock comes through
in every line of The Yellow
Wind, and it suffused every
sentence in his speech to The
New Israel Fund. "Every-
thing is so infected for me. I
can't think of anything else, I
can't write about simple
things anymore. The reality
around me is an acid that eats
through everything." ❑

Placement
Guarantee?

New York — The cantorial
placement division of the
United Synagogue of
America, the placement arm
for the Conservative move-
ment, has reaffirmed its com-
mitment to finding positions
for cantors irrespective of
gender.
This practice, which was
implemented recently, is in
keeping with the position ar-
ticulated by Dr. Ismar
Schorsch, chancellor of the
Jewish Thhological Seminary
of America.
