"The Best Kept .. .
Secret In Town"

aggressive.
"She does an excellent job
stopping the opposition from
scoring. She's like a lineman
in football. You don't get
much recognition but you do
the job."
Next year, Sopko expects to
move Fishkind back up front
"because she does have the
skills?'
Of this season on defense,
Fishkind says, "I learned a
lot. But there's a lot of dif-
ferent things you have to
learn from being a forward to
a defender!' The things she
has learned as a defender
should help her when she
returns to the forward spot. "I
think I know how to approach
a defender now, better than if
I was just a forward without
any defensive experience," she
agrees.
Fishkind has played in the
Lakes Area Soccer League as
well as for her middle. and
high school teams. For one
month before this season
began, she explains, "I prac-
ticed really hard, trying to get
myself in shape. I really
wanted to be on varsity."
Having made the varsity,
she was "surprised" to crack
the starting lineup, par-
ticularly in a new position.
On defense, she says, "I like
having the outlook on the rest
of the team. You can see up in
front of you, . you can see
everything that's going
wrong or going right. Overall,
I enjoy playing forward better
than defense," but she will do
"anything to support the
team!'
Fishkind, who also lettered
in swimming last fall, is en-
thusiastic about the Lakers'
winning season. "I think
we're a great team. We all
work really well together.
We're really a spirited team.
We don't have the best stats
and everything, but I think
we're a great team, overall!'
The JV squad under coach
Bill Lockwood includes four
Jewish players, two of whom
had never played competitive
soccer before.
Halfback Jenny Makanoff
is a regular who does not
start but plays about half of
every game. "Her biggest pro-
blem is she gets down on
herself too much . . . I have to
keep reassuring her 'You're a
good player, just hang in
there! She's a super young
lady," says Lockwood.
Fullback Heather Galison,
like Makanoff a freshman
with long soccer experience, is
"a hard-headed little kid but
she's a good player," reports
Lockwood, adding, "She's
coachable, too. She knows she
runs out of gas — I've got her
at fullback — she's a little
overweight and she can run

pretty good for a while then
she runs out of gas. I've been
telling her she has to improve
on her own and I think she's
doing it. She's coming along
pretty good!'
Jennifer Bayson and Mara
Schonberg, both freshmen
halfbacks, are first-year
players. Bayson, says
Lockwood, "does everything I
tell her, when I tell her. She's
a dream person to - be with.
When you tell her to do
something, she'll try it, no
back-talk. Just goes out and
tries her best. She's improv-
ing every game!'
Schonberg is "a super
young lady," says Lockwood.
"She does everything you tell
her. I can't say enough about
her. She's improving every
game, every day!'
Do the four have ambitions
to play on the varsity squad?
"I would imagine Galison and
Makanoff" do, says Lockwood.
"I don't really know about the
other two. I would imagine

(they want to). I don't see why
they'd be out if they didn't.
Right now I think Galison
and Makanoff would have the
better chance, because they
have played before. Those
other two are just learning.
It's kind of a complicated lit-
tle sport when you try to get
out there and use your feet for
something you've never done
before."
Looking ahead to next year,
when eight varsity seniors
graduate, there will be room
for some JV players to move
up. Lockwood says he has
some "super" sophomores
who will fill those spots, so
neither Galison nor Makanoff
will likely move up next
season.
So the Lakers' overall suc-
cess might keep their four
Jewish JV players one step
below the varsity next spring,
despite their improvement.
Meanwhile, Fishkind will
move back to forward and
hopes to become a scoring
force for an up-and-coming
West Bloomfield soccer
team. 0
