Five leaders in the Detroit
area will be honored by the
Jewish Theological Seminary
of America on June 9 at the
annual community-wide din-
ner at Adat Shalom
Synagogue.
Dr. Jerome and Sharon Hor-
witz, Daniel Knopper, Jean-
nette Tilchin and Saul
Waldman will be presented
with the seminary's Award of
Honor "for their dedicated
service to the community in
advancing the religious and
cultural traditions of Conser-
vative Judaism?'
Presenting the awards to
the honorees will be Rabbi
William Lebeau, vice
chancellor and chairman of
the department of profes-
sional skills at the Seminary.
Marcy Feldman and Dr.
Martin Hart are the dinner
chairmen. • Dr. Harris
Mainster is the Chancellor's
Council chairman and Harold
Berry is the general
chairman.
Rabbi Leonid Feldman, the
first Soviet-born rabbi ordain-
ed at the Jewish Theological
Seminary in New York, will
be the guest speaker.
Rabbi Feldman will present
the Sybil Goldman Memorial
Lecture, which was establish-
ed in 1987.
Dr. Horwitz, a member of
Congregation B'nai Moshe,
received his doctorate at the
University of Michigan.
While researching chemo-
therapeutic treatments, Dr.
Horwitz synthesized the drug
AZT 20 years ago, which is
used today in the treatment of
AIDS. He is also a professor at
Wayne State University
School of Medicine. Mrs. Hor-
witz is a member of the B'nai
Moshe Sisterhood.
A long-time member of
Adat Shalom Synagogue,
Knopper served on its board
and his parents were charter
members of the synagogue.
He is affiliated with the
Jewish Welfare Federation,
Bar-Ilan University, Jewish
National Fund and Israel
Bonds.
An immediate past presi-
dent of Congregation Beth
Shalom, Mrs. Tilchin is a
member of the national ad-
visory board of the United
Synagogue of America, a
graduate of United Hebrew
Schools, a member of the Na-
