qualify myself to participate.
If women have the opportuni-
ty, they should be qualified to
use it."
Rachel Galazan, 46, also
wanted to take part in the
service. "As a child in Israel,
I had religious training but
women did not participate.
Girls rarely went to shul, and
if they did they did not sit
with the men.
"When I turned 13 I had a
bat mitzvah party for my
family but we did not cele-
brate in the synagogue. It was
like a birthday party and the
tradition is to have cake and
sit around and sing. I wanted
to take this class so I could
participate in the synagogue
and read from the Torah."
As chairman of the ritual
committee at Adat Shalom,
Rachel Maisel, 54, has had
aliyahs and chanted the
blessings during the Torah
reading. "But I wanted to
learn to chant the Torah and
Haftorah," she says. "I
wanted to go through the pro-
cess of study. I was raised in
an Orthodox home. My par-
ents are from Asia, I'm from
England and I lived in South
Africa. I was taught to read
Hebrew but of course women
never participated in services.
"I wanted to be part of the
group of women who have
taken this class and enjoyed
it."
According to Rabbi Groner,
Shaarey Zedek's adult bat
mitzvah class began in
response to the desire of
women in the congregation
"to participate in the
ceremony of affirmation of
Jewish loyalty and respon-
sibility that we call bat mitz-
vah, and to share in an ex-
perience of Jewish learning
and undergo a program of
Jewish study."
The four-year-old adult bat
mitzvah ceremony at Shaarey
Zedek is also held on
Shavuot. "On the festival of
Shavuot we read the Book of
Ruth," Rabbi Groner ex-
plains. "It is the story of a
woman who accepted Juda-
ism in her adult life. . .
"Shavuot is also the time
when we celebrate the giving
of the Ibrah to the Jewish
people, so it is the appropriate
time for celebrating the ac-
ceptance of a high level of
Jewish learning and commit-
ment that is expressed by
those who become bat mitz-
vah as adults." ❑

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE COUNCIL OF ORTHODOX RABBIS

Statement by Judge Avern Cohen:
"We are a people of community. Our strength
throughout the ages has been premised upon our
capacity to organize our forces and care for our own
needs. Our values and traditions are a very impor-
tant part of the glue of our community. The Coun-
cil of Orthodox Rabbis has dedicated itself to the
maintenance of our traditional value system. Their
work has dealt with the many facets of Jewish corn-
munal and individual needs..
Rabbi Leizer Levin, in his role as the PRESIDENT
of the VAAD HARABONIM has been a strong force
in making the VAAD what it is today. It is appropriate
that he should be honored for his dedicated work
of over 50 years.
I urge you to be counted amongst the supporters
of the Council of Orthodox Rabbis and join us at
their annual dinner on WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8, 1988
at the WESTIN HOTEL."

Statement from David Hermelin:
"I have been involved with the Council of Or-
thodox Rabbis for over 25 years. I am proud to count
myself amongst its friends. My support and yours
is essential to allow this dedicated group of Rabbis
the ability to continue their vital work on behalf of
all members of the Greater Detroit Jewish
community.
I congratulate and extend my best wishes to RAB-
BI LEIZER LEVIN, an honored and respected leader
for over 50 years in our community. His thoughtful
leadership has been and continues to be a unifying
force for all of those Jewish values that we hold so
dear.
His scholarship, drive and determination in his
work as the PRESIDENT has allowed this organiza-
tion the success that we all enjoy. Please join with
us as we honor RABBI LEVIN and the VAAD
HARABONIM."
