Increase your interest in Israel Judaism," she says. "It is fascinating because they ex- plain everything in the Bi- ble." Says her husband, "We have done intense studying and we understand the mean- ing of all the words. We've been married 35 years and this is definitely one of the nicest things that we have done together." In addition to her Thmple Israel bat mitzvah ceremony on June 11, Lois Rubin, 48, celebrated her bat mitzvah on Massada when she traveled to Israel this spring with a group from the temple led by Rabbi Harold Loss. Coming from a Conser- vative upbringing, Rubin was surprised to find men who had not been bar mitzvah. Both Rick Halberg and Bill Lakritz are in her class. "I had very little training as a child," says Halberg. "My grandparents were very re- ligious but my parents were not. I was offered a choice and I chose not to have a bar mitz- vah. I regret that I was given that choice. I wish I had been forced to have a bar mitzvah. But doing it now gives me a stronger feeling about being a Jew and may mean more to me now than it would have then. "I'm very proud that I made the decision to do it now," he says. In addition to learning Jewish history, Halberg, 39, feels he is setting a good ex- ample for his two children, nine and six.
