FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CALL 669-1441 58 FRIDAY, MAY 27, 1988 N o problem!" the late Sammy Lieberman used to say when folks wanted something extra at their Raleigh House affairs. But Sammy himself did have a problem . . . The thing he always hoped for . . . his everlasting dream . . . never did come true. It was to eventually have a hotel, catering and total con- vention center on the site where Raleigh House has now been torn down. However, like the saying goes about apples not falling far from the tree, one of the persons who worked with him, Marci Coggan, is seem- ingly fulfilling Sammy's vi- sion . . . sort of as a memorial tribute to the man she serv- ed and admired from 1972 to 1976. As director of sales and marketing of the new Van Dyke Park, Van Dyke north of 13 Mile, she has constantly strived toward this goal .. . and sees its fruitful reality as Michigan's only one ac- credited by the International Association of Conference Centers. Van Dyke Park opened December 1987 . . . a $23 million unbelievable project that seems to beckon with its hundreds of thousands of square feet divided into a restaurant, hotel and con- ference center that offer businesses, and business travelers all the necessary facilities to enhance their pro- ductivity and yet provide the warmth and presence that en- sures a social atmosphere for dining and banquet events. The six-story hotel and con- ference center includes beeper rental, car rental, 250 guest rooms that include about 100 luxurious suites, teleconferencing capabilities, 200-seat auditorium with large rear-screen projection, up to 66,000 sq. ft. of ex- hibit/meeting places for con- ferences, etc. . . . The Central Park Ballroom (all ballrooms there are named after parks) has an over 500-person capacity with division available for smaller groups . . . Names of 11 parks are represented. Passing through the comfor- table, cozy-looking lounge bar, we entered the new Ivy's In The Park restaurant . . . with its pinks and teal decor .. . Dark pink tablecloth, light pinkish beige cloth walls, teal napkins. The relaxed, fine-dining at- mosphere of this 158-seating room was conducive to the ad- vent of a joyous meal . . . Hard to believe that this was once a Hoffman House restaurant attached to a Midway Motor Lodge . . . so much has been done for the chameleon-like change . . . (It was complete- ly gutted). Ivy's In The Park restaurant serves the entire convention center, baking its own breads and pastries .. . We enjoyed the gracious effi- ciency of waitperson Jesse Fleming, who brought us Ivy's chicken consomme that didn't taste like the chicken hardly touched some boiling water . . . Julienned carrots, leeks and wild mushrooms in the soup were plentiful .. . My grilled salmon was to perfection . . . so very tasty and tender, yet firm . . . ac- companied by delicious pineapple rice . . . Jesse brought a tray of luscious- looking pastries made at Ivy's that had the devil's look of temptation. Ivy's is a pleasant place to dine . . . with its square alcoves, large round chandeliers, padded booths of floral design on back, and other appointments of quiet elegance . . . Why waste words on salt and pepper shakers, one might ask, if they've never been to Ivy's .. . They aren't the mundane type, but rather more so con- versation pieces that people would like to take home ex- cept that all waitpersons must account for them. I enjoyed Poully-Fousse" from Le Cruvenet which is very welcomed to allow diners their choice of fine wines by the glass. Chef Ron Gasior is former- ly of The Whitney . . . Chef Reggie Wilson was at 1940 Chophouse . . . Ice carvings for banquets and parties are made by Chef Gene Fryle .. . Ivy's dining room manager is Bob Nash. Van Dyke Park Hotel and Convention Center has just about everything needed for such a facility . . . 32 meeting/dining rooms, state- of-the-art audio-visual equip- ment, indoor pool with atrium and cabana bar, whirlpool, sauna, etc. Remember that tall door Sammy, Lieberman had in the back at Raleigh House? .. . People thought he was nuts until Chevy and others began
