Leifer moved home to New York when producer Lorne Michaels offered her a wri- ter's spot on then an all-male writing team for "Saturday Night Live." A job as a staff writer allow- ed Leifer a much-needed break from the road, and pro- vided a regular salary and a steady job. She said it was a nice change. She wrote sketches for hosts Dudley Moore, John Lithgow and Angelica Huston. After a year, Leifer opted for the performing scene once again. Eventually, she wants to leave the stand-up circuit. She'd like to try some serious acting. So far, her film credits include the part of Rhonda in Desperately Seeking Susan. Now work comes more easi- ly for Leifer. "I'm making a living," she says, adding "and I'm on TV pretty regillarly. We'll see where that fits into the pic- ture." Down the road, Leifer says, she wants to write more and land television and movie roles. She keeps her performances fairly clean and focuses on every day slices of life - well, sort of. "The AIDS crisis has real- ly put a damper on my social life;' she told the Detroit crowd. "Before that, I was always attracted to bi-sexual Haitians who shot up?' Leifer assured the audience of one way to make sure no one sits in the neighboring empty seat on an airplane. "If someone comes over to you and asks if anyone is sit- ting in the seat next- to you, just say, 'No one except the Lord! " And, she said, ostracized Austrian leader Kurt Wald- heim really has legitimate troubles with the media. Leifer joked that Waldheim, in an interview recently with CBS newscaster Mike Wal- lace, instructed the well- known journalist to spell his name right. "Spell it right - N-A-Z-I." . .
