disagree with his politics, but
William F. Buckley Jr. likes
my candy," says Weinblatt.
"He's very polite."
Whether conservative,
moderate or liberal, people
are taken by Minerva sweets.
lb what does Weinblatt at-
tribute such success? "We're
personal," Weinblatt explains.
Though Weinblatt has five
employees, primarily U-M
students, she does the nitty
gritty part of the work. "I'm
the only person who touches
all the chocolate."
Her candy must meet very
high expectations for they are
hers. "When I was little,
things did not taste the way
I wanted them to taste,"
Weinblatt explains. Now,
given the opportunity she dic-
tates what she wants. "I want
my candy to taste really good
to me. If there are any flavors
that don't appeal I tend not to
use them."
Weinblatt is not adverse to
getting other opinions, but
she tends to keep them
familiar. "If I want to taste
test, I give it to my 6 year old,
Aaron," Weinblatt explains.
"If he knows what the flavor
is, I'm on the right track."
Good chocolate, as
Weinblatt explains, should
have depth to its taste.
Weinblatt tries to develop
that quality in her yummies
by using different types of
chocolate to achieve a balance
of flavors. If she is not com-
pletely pleased by the taste or
look of her candies — the day
this writer was visiting some
of her truffles didn't have
enough shine — she'll place
them on the reject plate.
Though Minerva Street's
goodies are not cheap —
prices for a box of truffles, for
example, run from $25 to $29
— Weinblatt purposefully
makes products like chocolate
dipped pretzels and potato
chips for those who don't have
a lot of loose change in their
pockets.
And Weinblatt herself is no
snob when it comes to enjoy-
ing chocolate, all kinds of
chocolate. When she was in
the process of perfecting her
coconut truffle; what was her
ideal prototype? "My goal
was to make it the ultimate
Mounds bar," Weinblatt ex-
plains. Weinblatt recognizes
one of the special attributes of
chocolate. "You use it in a
clutch situation," she says.
So what did she ask her
husband to buy for her the
day she spent 18 hours mak-

ing candy for food brokers at
a Washington, D.C. food show
only to discover that the can-
dy couldn't be used because
there were finger prints all
over it?
"I said, 'Get me a cold
Snicker's bar,' " Weinblatt
recalls.
