Bigotry program.
"I always knew anti-
Semitism was out there, but
it never touched me," said
Epstein, of West Bloomfield.
"When I see the swastikas, I
get sick to my stomach. This
is hate. This is threatening. It
is desecrating memories of
people who died in the
Holocaust. It is making a
mockery of the deaths of 6
million Jews."
Epstein reported the har-
rassment incidents to campus
police, who have no leads in
the case.
Meanwhile, the Case Hall
student government passed a
resolution on Monday con-
demning the anti-Semitic ac-
tion and will distribute the
resolution in every dormitory
residence mailbox.
"I'm starting to get
paranoid," Epstein said. "I'm
all consumed with it.
Everywhere I go, I think
about it."
Hillel officials hope to put a
lid on such blatant anti-
Semitism with the newly
created Campaign Against
Bigotry. Hillel Director Shel-
ly Cellar in January started
urging the MSU Religious
Advisors Association to lead
the fight against bigotry after
an editorial cartoon in the
campus newspaper, The State
News, compared Israel's
deportation of nine Palesti-
nians to theNazi persecution
of Jews.
"This is the first time that
Hillel at MSU has been the
leader in bringing together
all different religious student

groups on campus," said
Hillel Program Director Pam
Viviano. "People come to col-
lege with stereotypes. We
need to break down the
stereotypes:'
In fact, Michigan Region
Anti-Defamation League
Director Richard Lobenthal
said anti-Semitic incidents
have noticeably increased on
college campuses since the
Palestinaian uprising began
in the administered ter-
ritories. He blamed the media
for distorting the issue.
"There is a falling apart of
the curtain of civility which,
until now, blunted people's
prejudicial behavior," Loben-
thal said. "It is not out of
vogue now to show prejudice."
The religious advisers, a
30-member group comprised
of Gellar and pastors and
church members from East
Lansing, set up a task force
and allocated $500 for pro-
grams aimed at combatting
bigotry on campus.
Objectives include identify-
ing the sources and extent of
bigotry, sensitizing the cam-
pus, mobilizing members, col-
laborating with MSU for pro-
gramming in campus
residence halls and making
the administration more
aware of and active in the
fight against racism, anti-
Semitism and sexism.
Plans are in the works for
an interfaith theater group
that would perform sketches
dramatizing the various
forms of bigotry on campus.
Gellar said theater is an effec-
tive way to sensitize students.

group gathered petitions with
more than 100 signatures of
temple members calling for
the officers' removal.
Some Beth El members left
the congregation after Rabbi
Schwartz's departure. About
30 former temple families
formed their own chavurah,
which met monthly.
Members of the chavurah
were involved in a tribute to
Rabbi Schwartz, held in
March at the Troy Hilton Inn.
More than 500 persons at-
tended the event, and an ad-
ditional 50 were turned away.
The Shir Shalom member
said, however, that Beth El's
decision not to renew Rabbi
Schwartz's contract was only
one of the reasons the new
temple is being formed. He
said members of Shir Shalom
had been interested for some
time in establishing a new
congregation.
