A A BELL

From its earliest days, the
Histadrut received both
moral and financial support
from top U.S. labor leaders,
and trade union leaders today
are quick to praise the Israeli
labor confederation. Kirkland
once said that Israeli trade
unions illustrate "a living ex-
ample of what labor can ac-
complish in a democracy."
The Histadrut has returned
the compliment, paying fre-
quent tributes to labor
leaders. Two weeks ago,
Michigan State AFL-CIO
President Frank Garrison
was honored by the Histadrut
in a dinner attended by more
than 600 individuals. The
Histadrut regularly honors
local leaders who have been
consistent supporters of
Israel, as does Israel Bonds.
The Bond organization will
honor the United Food and
Commerical Workers Union's
Potter in October.
And, like Israel Bonds, the
Histadrut sponsors trips to
Israel for U.S. labor leaders —
including several from De-
troit. Last year, the Jewish
Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit,
together with the Histadrut,
sponsored a trip to Israel for
nine local labor leaders.
The results were positive.
The nine men and women
have proven to be outspoken
supporters of Israel, according
to Goldie Eskin, regional ex-
ecutive director of the
Histadrut.
One national participant on
a Histadrut-sponsored trip
was Sam Meyers, president of
United Auto Workers Local
259 in New York City.
Meyers is a rare find in the
UAW. He is Jewish.
Even during the heyday
years when Jews were highly
active in the labor movement,
they never really permeated
the auto industry. This is pro-
bably because most Jews were
immigrants from Eastern
Europe, where they had little
— if any — involvement with
metal building trades and
heavy industry.
Meyers, however, entered
the field early, working first
in aircraft, then as a union
organizer, and finally as
president of UAW Local 259,
where he has served for more
than 30 years.
As with the Jewish com-
munity, the AFL-CIO and all
its constituent unions, in-
cluding the UAW, encompass
a wide diversity of views on
issues. Meyers himself is a
member of Americans for a
Progressive Israel and an
outspoken supporter of the
"land for peace" concept.
But there appears to be an
exception. Israel.

Thinking about buying a hot graphics computer to liven up your business
presentations? Before you make any costly snap decisions, you owe it to
yourself to stop and look at the Commodore' Amiga 2000. It handles
advanced graphic design, stunning 3-D animation and pro-quality video
effects at about half the cost of a Mac II. And once you've seen an Amiga
electronic slideshow in 4096 colors, you'll appreciate how stark and finite the
black and white Mac SE can be. So for the high-impact, affordable alter-
native to a Mac, make your next leap to a Commodore Amiga 2000 dealer.
