local elections, countered by
proposing that the Knesset
balloting, scheduled for
Nov. 1, be advanced to this
August.
Labor balked, because a
good many of its voters vaca-
tion abroad in August.
Observers note that for some
reason, that is not the case
with Likud supporters. In re-
cent years, Likud has relied
increasingly on the working-
class vote. Israel has no
absentee ballots.
As the fight shaped up in
the Knesset this week,
Labor's proposals were sup-
ported by the leftist Mapam
and Citizens Rights Move-
ment, as well as the centrist
Shinui party.
The National Religious Par-
ty, whose vote is often pivotal
when the two major parties
are deadlocked, said it would
back Labor against an ad-
vanced election date.
Likud, for its part, has been
unable to rally its traditional
right-wing allies. The ultra-
Orthodox Shas party was ex-
pected to vote against the
Likud initiative.
Anti-Semitic
Activity Rises
Johannesburg (JTA) — An
upsurge of neo-Nazi and anti-
Semitic activity in recent
weeks has the South African
Jewish community alarmed.
The latest incident was the
daubing of two swastikas in
gold paint on the Torah
Center in Yeoville, a Johan-
nesburg suburb, where a
yeshivah opened six weeks
ago. Six Israeli scholars arriv-
ed recently to study there.
According to a spokes-
woman for the South African
Jewish Students Union,
Hilary Meyerov, "There has
been a spate of anti-Semitic,
neo-Nazi type incidents since
the placing recently of a pig's
head outside a Durban
synagogue?'
Anti-Semitism
Plagues Rome
Rome (JTA) — Italian Jewry
is facing the worst wave of
anti-Semitism since the
fascist regime a half-century
ago, according to Chief Rabbi
Elio Toaff of Rome.
Toaff substantiated that
charge by displaying bundles
of hate mail and scores of
photographs of anti-Semitic
graffiti at a news conference
in the Rome Great Synagogue
recently.
