Shalom marks the second
time in less than 50 years
when a Beth El splinter
group has created its own
temple.
In 1941, Beth El members
broke from the congregation
and established Temple
Israel. That split was
precipitated by the Temple
Beth El board's decision not
to promote Associate • Rabbi
Leon Fram when Dr. Leo
Franklin, Beth El senior rab-
bi, announced his retirement.
The issue was said to be Rab-
bi Fram's Zionism.
Rabbi Schwartz and the
Beth El board apparently had
disagreements of a different
sort.

— COMMUNITY INVITED —

.

At a June 1987 meeting,
Rabbi Schwartz said in his
annual report, "For any rab-
bi to succeed . . . his role and
responsibility must be spell-
ed out and supported by the
board, and the board must
understand its duties and
functions and take respon-
sibility for them."
He also said it was too
much to expect a head rabbi
to visit seven hospitals in the
area, conduct four to six
shivah calls each week,
preside at several funerals,
work with b'nai mitzvah and
perform other daily rab-
binical duties.

Blumenthal
Leaving Beth El

STAFF REPORT

.

iting a desire to
return to hospital
chaplaincy, Rabbi
Marc Blumenthal will leave
his post as Temple Beth El's
associate rabbi June 30.
Rabbi Blumenthal, who
would have celebrated his se-
cond anniversary with the
Reform congregation in July,
has been hired as the director
of the Denver Community
Chaplaincy Program and as
executive director of the city's
rabbinical council.
His duties will include
hospital chaplaincy, and work_
in nursing homes, correc-
tional facilities and com-
munal agencies. He will also
continue his work with AIDS
patients in association with
the Jewish-organized AIDS
Task Force of Denver.
Rabbi Blumenthal told The
Jewish News that he decided
to take the Denver position
because he enjoyed hospital
chaplaincy. The ongoing tur-
moil and personnel changes
at Temple Beth El also in-
fluenced his decision, he said.
