Sam Lerner receives the Berman Award from Madeline and Mandell
Berman and Joel Tauber.
Sam Lerner Is Cited
With Berman Award
Samuel Lerner, executive
director of Jewish Family Ser-
vice, received the communi-
ty's first "Berman Award for
Outstanding Professional
Service" during a reception
last week.
More than 150 colleagues
and friends attended the
ceremony following the
Jewish Communal Profes-
sional Management Con-
ference, sponsored by the
Leadership Development
Department of the Jewish
Welfare Federation.
Created through an endow-
ment by Mandell L. and
Madeleine H. Berman, the
award recognizes the con-
tributions of Jewish com-
munal professionals within
the network of Federation
and its beneficiaries.
Executive direcor of both
the Jewish Family Service
and Resettlement Service,
Lerner has guided both agen-
cies for the past 25 years. He
will retire at the end of this
year.
Joel D. Tauber, chairman of
Federation's Executive Corn-
mittee, lauded Lerner's ac-
complishments over the past
quarter century, crediting
him with maintaining the
agency's cohesive, construc-
tive nature in times of stress
and growth.
Tauber cited Lerner's role
in the creation of many JFS
services, including services
for the elderly; resettlement
of Soviet Jewry; in-home
respite care; the poverty pro-
gram; and Kosher Meals-on-
Wheels (in cooperation with
the National Council of
Jewish Women.
Tauber said Lerner's
dedicated leadership enabled
Jewish Family Service to
become a world-class institu-
tion, with an international
recognition for delivery of ser-
vice. He also pointed out that
for its last evaluation, JFS
received a 99.7 rating (out of
a possible 100) from the Coun-
cil on Accreditation.
