Second Avenue Gang To Recall The 1960s FESTIVAL '88 -Fine, juried art Rabbi Marc Tanenbaum gailiFtaD 485(ctra. A n idea which germi- nated at a bar mitz- vah party a year ago will blossom this weekend in a reunion of the self-styled Se- cond Avenue Gang. Persons from as far as Con- necticut — and possibly Israel — will return to Detroit to recall the mid-1960s at 4841 Second Ave. One of the major events to bring back the col- lege flavor and memories of the old house will be a renact- ment of the Hillel hootenan- nies of that by-gone era. A group of alumni from Wayne State University's B'nai B'rith Hillel Founda- tion will reunite for three events this weekend: a Satur- day night ice cream social, a Sunday family picnic and Sunday evening dinner. Organized by Larry and Ronna (Kritzer) Bassin, Marilyn (Sitron) Dizik, Her- shel Gardin, Marlene (Cern) Gitelman and Hedy (Coblentz) Jacobson, the com- mittee contacted 40 WSU Hillel friends now living throughout the U.S., in Europe and Israel. "Barbara Rothenberg wrote a lovely letter from Holland," said Ronna Bassin. "She's not able to come in, but it was just great to hear from her, and she paid to have the reu- nion pamphlet sent to her." The Bassins are hosting a dinner for 25 adults on Sun- day. The ice cream social and Hillel hootenanny will be held at the home of Zvi and Marlene Gitelman. Sunday's picnic is scheduled for the Southfield Civic Center. Hillel moved from the old house in the early 1970s into its current home in the WSU Student Center. The house still stands across Second Avenue from WSU's Old Main, and is now subdivided into three apartment units.
