SHIVA BASKETS .. .

Sinai Hospital will conduct
screening tests for Thy-Sachs
disease beginning June 6.
Tay-Sachs causes progressive
destruction of the central ner-
vous system and death by five
years of age.
There is no cure for Tay-
Sachs disease. However, it can
be prevented by screening
prospective parents to find
out if they are carriers of the
Tay-Sachs gene. If both
parents are carriers, they
have a 25 percent chance of
having a child with Tay-Sachs
disease. About 85 percent of
Tay-Sachs victims are Jews of
Eastern European ancestry.
A simple blood test deter-
mines whether or not a per-
son is a carrier. Sinai is offer-
ing the test at two screening
locations, the main hospital
on Outer Drive east of Green-
field in Detroit, and the new
Berry Health Center on Or-
chard Lake Road north of
12 Mile Road in Farmington
Hills.
Screening hours will be
June 7-9 from 9 a.m. to noon.
Specific appointment times
will not be assigned, although
patients are asked to call
493-6060 to let the office
know what day they'd like to
come in for the test. Tests can
be done at other times by
special arrangement. Results
will be sent by mail or phone
in about two weeks.
The screening program is
sponsored by the Sinai
Hospital Guild and Depart-
ment of Obstetrics and
Gynecology.

The American Red Cross,
Southeastern Michigan
Chapter, will offer a variety of
health and safety education
classes during June.
Health and safety educa-
tion courses offered include
"Multi-Media Standard First
Aid," "How to Measure Blood
Pressure" and "Babysitting."
