I'd like to get a studio in Pon- tiac, and I'm now looking for one. It would be close to home, and there's a very large enclave of working artists in Pontiac. Also, the property is relatively inexpensive. "I really need a (sculpture) studio outside my house where I can cast pieces because that's really, really dirty work. The dust gets in- to the ventilating system throughout the house, and you need so much material besides. I'm spread out all over the basement right now with pieces in various stages of completion. Some are ready to be molded, but I just don't have the place to mold them." Often, Gottlieb says, it takes months to complete a sculptured piece. An artist who sometimes re-works pieces a number of times, she titled a recent hydrostone wall relief, "A Million Times Over." "As I get to know a model, I try to capture something that I see in them," she says. "Not long ago, I did a (sculptural) piece of my step- father and, before I had finished with it, I could see that he had aged. I took the clay then, and changed the piece into 'something' I felt was happening to him. Something that's important for me to try to capture is the feeling of passing time. I understand much more about Dali's melting clocks at this point in my life than I did even 10 years ago. "I nearly always work with live models," Gottlieb em- phasizes. "With my drawings, I try to catch light, and a feel- ing of mystery. The sculpture has more to do with my feel- ings about things." Her work will be on display in the Quiet Room at the Far- mington Hills Library. L "I love the Linguine Buconiera" .. .
