Equally signifi- cant, gemilut chassadim heals not only the recipient of its goodness but the donor as well. The giver who pledges not only his money but his soul transforms not only the external situation but his own character within. Arthur Simon, president of the Washington-based Bread for the World informs us that there are one billion people worldwide who live in ab- solute poverty — without enough food or clean water or health services. There are in our country 32 million people, "most of whom cannot afford a nutritionally adequate diet." There are sick and frightened patients in the hospital and hospices of our community, desperately lone- ly people in the homes of the aged. To respond to them is to experience the answer to our quest for the meaning of our being. Within us are divine, curative powers that define our dignity and our purpose. Study, prayer, dietary laws, the Sabbath and festivals are the holy memories meant to remind us of our direction. "Where art Thou?" and "what for" are twin questions that we answer by defining the place that we stand for the other. There are no blessings for gemilut chassadim. First, lest the blessings delay the per- formance of the act. And sec- ondly because the act is its own blessing both for those who receive and for those who give it. immimmmi NEWS Zundel Gets Prison Term Toronto (JTA) — Toronto publisher and West German citizen Ernst Zundel was sentenced to nine months in jail by district court Judge Ronald Thomas for publish- ing a pamphlet denying the Nazi Holocaust ever took place. The sentencing last week came after Zundel was found guilty after a four-month trial. Zundel could have received a maximum jail sentence of two years for violating Canada's statutes against spreading "false news." Prosecutor John Pear- son had asked for a sentence close to the maximum and a period of probation in which Zundel would be prevented from repeating his claims. you save • safety • non-smoker • Over 50 (AARP) • Bloom yod Bloom • 10% 10% 35% save save save • Registered Eiectrologists • Come and let us remove your unwanted hair problem and improve your appearance. you save 55% 65% Near 12 Mile Rd. bet.
