Ultimate questions about
meaning and identity are dis-
solved in small talk. Men and
women speak of their busy-
ness or their boredom. At
times, in crisis situations,
facing the gray walls of a
hospital or a mortuary or a
divorce court, the boredom
ends, the busyness subsides,
the strategies of evasion
crumble, and the questions
cry out: Who am I? What am
I? What do I stand for? What
does life demand of me?
Ultimate questions are dis-
missed as abstract, spiritual,
theoretical. Their persistence
is annoying. People pride
themselves in being practical,
pragmatic spirits who func-
tion brightly in a sophisti-
cated technological society.
Technocrats rarely ask "What
for?" They ask, "How much?"
or "How" or "When?" Tech-
nocrats boast, "I can get there
faster, more efficiently?' Once
they are there, they don't
know the meaning of their ar-
rival. As in Kafka's parable of
the messenger, they traverse
long distances until, arriving
at the destination, they have
forgotten the message. Ours
is a society that is concerned
with means not with ends.
Men and women of means are
petrified by questions of ends.

On every festival they can
hide behind the skirts of the
community and retain their
anonymity in the generality
of communal history. On
Pesach they were redeemed,
on Sukkot they wandered the
desert, on Shavuot they re-
ceived the Revelation, on
Tisha B'Av they suffered the
destruction of the Temple, on
Chanukah the Temple was re-
dedicated, on Purim they won
a great victory over the
enemy, on Yom Hashoah they
suffered the loss of six million
and on Yom Atzmaut they
witnessed the establishment
of the State of Israel. In the
"they" of community, the sin-
gularity of the question of
identity, worth and purpose
can be hidden.
Against this escapism, the
Bible warns, "You shall not
hide from your own flesh."
How then are we to touch our
own flesh, remove the armour
which hides our selves from
ourselves?

Study

Looking at the texts or
listening to the teachers and
preachers, the answer is plain
enough: Study. Learn. Attend
a school. Become a master of
the text. Which other people
holds that the House of Study
is holier than the House of
Prayer?
A church is a church, a mos-
