Carlucci Opens
AIPAC Confab
Washington (JTA) — U.S.
Defense Secretary Frank
Carlucci, in an address at the
opening session of the 29th
annual policy conference of
the American Israel Public
Affairs Committee, said that
Israel's weapons sales to the
United States rose from $9
million in 1983 to $250
million in 1987 and "will con-
tinue to grow."
Carlucci, who last Sunday
described Israel as "a faithful
friend in a turbulent region,"
said, "Israel will remain an
important source of (weapons)
systems that are proven and
ready in some cases, saving
the United States the time
and expense of developing its
own."
Carlucci spoke one month
after Israel and the United
States signed a memorandum
of agreement that institu-
tionalized the meetings of
economic, political and
military working groups of
the two countries.
Rare Hebrew
Book Found
Rome (JTA) — A precious
15th-century Hebrew book,
stolen last October from the
national library in Florence
and worth over $1 million,
has been recovered in the
United States by Interpol.
The thief was identified last
week as 61-year old Israeli
Yitzhak Schwarz, who posed
as a rabbi. Israeli police
helped in pinpointing his
identity and in tracing the
book, which apparently went
through the hands of a Lon-
don antiquarian.
Florence officials have
issued an arrest warrant for
Schwarz on charges of ag-
gravated theft and illegal ex-
port of a work of art. Schwarz
visited the Florence library
twice, each time asking to see
the book — "The Salterium
Davidis," printed in Brescia
in 1493 — and using his pass-
port as an identity document.
He managed to leave the
library with the book in his
possession.
