who wears down his op-
ponents. "Most of the time I
just stay at the baseline and
hope they make a mistake, or
try to pass 'em when they
come to the net"
For Nagel, the young
Berkley team is a challenge.
"You have to be patient.
That's what I try to teach the
kids, is that you shouldn't feel
really, really great when you
win and you shouldn't feel
really, really bad when you
lose. Because it's a learning
thing. You should be gaining
something from the win and
from the loss."
Berkley, 6-5 overall and 5-1
in the Southeastern
Michigan Association
through May 9, is stronger in
singles than in doubles. "My
singles kids are intense," says
Nagel. "They've been in the

winter programs, they've
gone through the whole
routine. Winning and losing
means a lot more to them
than my doubles kids right
now. Perhaps next year that
might change."

While Rubenstein is not
surprised at the Bears' suc-
cess this season, he feels that
"in a few years we'll probably
be a lot better. Most of the
people have been playing a lot
. . . hopefully we'll do a little
bit better next year because
this year we're still a little bit
too young, I think. I think
this year of experience will
help out a lot."
So while Berkley looks for-
ward to a strong future in the
next few years, North Farm-
ington's future is early next
month in the state meet. 111

ROUND UP

Collins Returns
To Lineup

Senior co-captain Dan Col-
lins played his first baseball
game of the season for Birm-
ingham Groves on May 11.
Collins, a shortstop who b fit-
ted .335 as a junior, was
hospitalized for three weeks
after contracting food poison-
ing during a spring trip to
Acapulco. "It's good to have
him back as shorstop, defen-
sively," said Groves coach Jim
Crosby. "We've had a ton of in-
juries, but Dan's was one of
the big things that hurt us."
Groves' sophomore pitcher
Brian Feldman is 1-3 this
season, but Crosby says that
the lefty is throwing well.
"He's been pitching against
some tough competition."

Stross Ends
Frosh Season

The University of Michigan
women's tennis team showed
great improvement this
season, thanks in part to the
contribution of freshman
Wendy Stross of Ann Arbor.

Stross posted a 22-9 record at
No. three singles, winning
her last eight matches and
ten of her last 13. She won
four straight matches at the
Big Ten Championships,
April 29-May 1.
The Wolverines finished
18-9 overall, tied for the se-
cond best win total in
Michigan history. Michigan
finished fifth in the Big Ten
Championships, its best
finish in three years. Stross
was one of three Wolverines
to win over 20 matches.
